COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) — A military veteran turned to Six On Your Side for help after getting the surprise of his life. He was surprised to find out he was "dead." At least as far as the government was concerned.

"We are so sorry to learn of the death of Manis McKenzie, and extend to you our deepest sympathy," said Manis as he read from a letter to his wife from the Veterans Administration.

"And they said I had died March 30th and if I'd known that, I wouldn't have scheduled the knee surgery," he said as he laughed.

McKenzie had just returned home from knee surgery. He's got a great sense of humor, which he promptly used on his wife.

"I called my wife and I said, 'I thought you told me that the surgery went well.' She goes, 'well it did.' And I said, 'well I don't think it went so well. I got a letter stating that I died,'" he said.

This is the first time Israel's Defense Ministry has published exact figures on the number of soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress due to Operation Protective Edge

Of the 481 soldiers the army recognized as disabled veterans due to the 2014 Gaza war, around 30 percent – 143 soldiers – suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, according to Defense Ministry data.

This is the first time the ministry has published exact figures on the number of soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress due to Operation Protective Edge.
Previous studies done by the army’s medical corps put the rate of soldiers who suffered from PTSD after participating in active combat much lower – seven to 20 percent. The rate was 10 to 20 percent in both the 1973 Yom Kippur War and the 1982 Lebanon War, and just seven to 10 percent during the second intifada, the corps said.

The effort to rehabilitate the minds, bodies, and lives of these soldiers is the motivation behind the commitment from the Department of Veterans Affairs and 3D printing corporations like Stratasys.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs has begun experimenting with the use of 3D printing to create prosthetic limbs for amputee war veterans in a more efficient and personalized system, and San Antonio is home to one of these machines.

This year, the Veterans Affairs Center for Innovation has partnered with Stratasys, one of the leading corporations for 3D printing in the world. Together, these organizations are working to revive parts of the body that were once dead, or lost completely, for US Veterans.

Limb injuries have become more commonplace in surviving war veterans because of the evolution of body protection armor. As it becomes more advanced, soldiers can withstand shots to the body that would normally be fatal. Limb injuries, however, are sustainable, meaning soldiers can continue to live, even with a disability.

However, technology has anticipated these results at an equally rapid rate. Prosthetics are artificial structures created to replace lost body parts and restore functionality. While one of the earliest prosthetic inventions is thought to be a set of artificial toes in Egypt from 3000 BCE, modern-day amputees will be experiencing an entirely new era of artificial anatomy.

"He had served as a senior airman in the military but was disciplined and resigned, she said. He tried to enlist in the Marines but was turned down, she said.

"He believed it was the Air Force that was keeping him from being a member of the Marines," she said.

BIXBY, Okla. (AP) -- The FBI says a pipe bomb explosion that damaged an Air Force recruiting station in northeast Oklahoma is not being called an act of domestic terrorism.

An FBI spokesperson said a man has been taken into custody at the Sand Dollar Apartments near 61st and Riverside in Tulsa in connection with the explosion. That man was identified as Benjamin Roden, 28.

Roden was arrested at 3 p.m. by officers with the Tulsa Police Department.

Special Agent Jessi Rice said Tuesday that the blast in the Tulsa suburb of Bixby is not being called terrorism because investigators have not determined a motive.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had said earlier that agents were treating the late Monday explosion as a possible act of domestic terrorism out of "an abundance of caution," because of its proximity to the recruiting office.

LACEY, Wash. (AP) - Authorities have identified a man fatally shot by a Washington State Patrol trooper Saturday along Interstate 5 who allegedly had called 911 and requested "suicide by cop" before threatening the officer with a knife.

The Olympian reports 22-year-old National Guard reservist Michael Rude of Kent was shot by a trooper on the freeway in Lacey.

Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock said Monday that an autopsy shows Rude died of gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen with internal bleeding.
