PTSD on Trial: Iraq Veteran

Ohio judge finds Mississauga veteran not guilty of attempted murder due to insanity
The Star

Staff Reporter
April 14, 2017
Lesko, a permanent resident of Canada where he has lived since 2009, served in the U.S. military from 2003 to 2008, including two tours in Iraq.

He was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following his arrest.

A Mississauga veteran was found not guilty by reason of insanity on Friday for an attempted murder and felonious assault charge he faced in Ohio.

The charges stemmed from an incident in November 2016 when Jason Lesko allegedly stabbed his brother several times in the neck, chest and hand with a kitchen knife at their father’s house in Ravenna, Ohio.

Lesko’s wife Precious recalled her husband being confused and “behaving erratically” on Nov. 28.

The next morning, she awoke to find her husband had disappeared from their Mississauga home without his cellphone or a change of clothes.

He turned up at his father’s house in Ohio, where his brother was. His brother tried to reason with him, urging him to return to his family in Canada.

Jason Lesko was charged on Dec. 8 with attempted murder, felonious assault and disrupting public services in connection with the incident involving his brother, which he couldn’t even remember, according to Precious.

Decorated Marine Facing Jail Time in New Jersey Mandatory Gun Sentence

UPDATE
Commuted by Christie: No jail time for Marine whose friend grabbed his gun

DECORATED MARINE VETERAN FIGHTING FOR HIS FREEDOM AFTER MANDATORY GUN SENTENCE IN NEW JERSEY
ABC 7 News
Jim Hoffer
Friday, April 14

NEW YORK -- A decorated Marine veteran is fighting for his freedom after his arrest on gun charges in New Jersey.

Even though the firearm was legal, it was not registered in that state. The convicted man, Hisashi Pompey, has asked Gov. Chris Christie to step in.

To combat gang violence, New Jersey lawmakers several years ago tacked on mandatory sentences for gun-related offenses.

No longer does a person have to be in the process of committing a crime with a gun to end up behind bars. Simply possessing an unpermitted gun in the state can make someone a felon and a prisoner.

Pompey served as a Marine military police sergeant in three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, for which he received medals for bravery.

He has a wife and young children whom he may have to leave again -- not to serve his country but to serve three years behind bars.

Vietnam Veteran receives new home

Vietnam Veteran receives new home in Rainelle

"I wasn't looking for a handout, I was looking for a hand up. This is everything we could ask for." Guy Adams
GREENBRIER COUNTY (WVVA) - Guy Adams is a retired Army Veteran who served in Vietnam. He gave a lot. But he's lost a lot, too. When last summer's floods destroyed his house, he didn't know where to turn. But then fate stepped in.

"It was like God put me in the right place at the right time because I was at the door when they had called looking for a veteran, and I talked about the houses and I was getting ready to walk out the door and they told me they thought I was who they're looking for," said Adams.

The people at VOAD, a disaster relief organization, agree.

"Brothers for Brothers had asked for a Veteran and he basically just fell into our lap and I think it was just meant to be that he and his granddaughter get this home," said Robin Williams, VOAD Case Manager.

For everyone involved, it seemed like an easy decision to make.

"The amount of things he and his family have been through, as well as the number of awards and accommodations he's received in service it was almost a no brainer," Chris Schroeder, ASP Greenbrier County Center Director, said.

Marine Not Good Enough to Be Buried in Veteran's Cemetery, Now Has Highway With His Name

Fallen Oklahoma Vietnam veteran finally being recognized for his sacrifice
BY KFOR-TV and K. QUERRY
APRIL 14, 2017
On Friday, a portion of I-40 by Henryetta was renamed the Anthony Grundy Memorial Highway.
HENRYETTA, Okla. - An Oklahoma community is righting a wrong that dates back to the Vietnam War.

Anthony Grundy was the only service member from Henryetta that died in the war. He was a brave Marine who signed up in 1967 and died in the Tet Offensive.

When Grundy's parents sought permission to bury their son with other veterans in the Henryetta Cemetery, they were denied.

At the time, they were told it was due to a lack of space.

"We tried in Henryetta but they said they didn't have the space," Alpheus Grundy, Anthony's brother, told NewsChannel 4 in 2016.

"I didn't cry then but I cried later," he continues.

However, everyone now acknowledges that it was because Grundy was African-American.
