OEF-OIF veteran records deputies punching homeless woman on bus

Deputies Punch Homeless, Mentally Ill Woman on Bus
by Kristina Chew
January 11, 2012

Two Los Angeles County deputy sheriffs have been videotaped hitting a woman with unspecified mental health and other disabilities. The incident happened on Monday night, on a Metro bus in Bellflower. Jermaine Green and his fiancee Violet Roberts boarded a bus and noted another passenger, a woman with a stroller full of pillows who clearly had “special needs.” The two deputies, one male and one female, boarded the bus at the next stop and confronted the woman, grabbing at her and telling her to get off the bus. The male deputy punched her — and Green recorded everything on his cell phone video camera.

Said Green, who had just returned home after serving in the army for six years with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan:

“I couldn’t believe it. He seen me taping. He looked up at the camera a few times, and he still hit her like that, and I can’t believe he didn’t try to diffuse the situation at all.”

“In the Army, they gave us extensive training for rules of engagement. There’s proper protocols and steps you take. This lady didn’t do anything, she wasn’t combative and he actually turned combative on her.”

When Green refused to hand over the video, the deputies told him he could be arrested and asked if he had any warrants. Green answered, “”I said no, I’m a veteran, I just came back, I have six years, I have no record, and he said ‘We’ll see about that.’”

Veteran Uses His Disability Check To House Homeless Veterans

Shane D'Onofrio, N.M. Veteran, Uses His Disability Check To House Homeless Veterans

It's an understatement to say that Navy veteran Shane D'Onofrio would give the shirt off his back for his fellow servicemen.

The Rio Rancho, N.M. veteran actually dedicates his income to vets in need, according to KOAT.com.

D'Onofrio reinvests his disability check -- about $1,700 each month -- back into What Would U Give, a nonprofit he started a few years ago designed to help other disabled veterans get off the streets while building community development and helping veterans achieve their after-military life goals.

Fort Hood soldier found dead at home

Soldier found dead in his Tomball home

A Fort Hood soldier who had recently returned from Iraq was found dead in his Tomball home on New Years’ Day.

Private First Class Kenneth McDaniel, 23, returned to Fort Hood in November 2011 as President Obama ordered troops home from Iraq, McDaniel’s mother Gloria said. The family enjoyed a Christmas holiday united with their three children, including Kenneth, his sister Kathryn, and older brother Kevin, a Sergeant at Fort Hood.

On New Years’ Day, Gloria McDaniel attended church after leaving Kenneth in a “deep sleep.” When McDaniel and her husband returned home, they found Kenneth in the garage and couldn’t get him to wake up, so they called 911.

Autopsy results are still pending, according to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, and no cause of death has been determined.

Marines investigating video

UPDATE
Jan 12, 2012 1:24

I just watched the video and it is real. The shadows I was questioning moved. Maybe I just didn't want to believe it was real.

What were they thinking doing this in the first place and putting it up on YouTube afterwards? Did they think about the other Marines still there and how this would make them hated by a lot more Afghans?

That is not what bothers me the most about this. Look at the picture and see what is wrong with it.

Unless there are two suns in Afghanistan, this doesn't make sense.  Two shadows go toward the left, but two go right.  The other odd thing is there is a shadow with an arm up but it does not match the figure.  Either this is a twisted idea of a photoshop stunt or I'm seeing things.

It is a "reasonable conclusion" the video was taken in Afghanistan, an official says
The story was made public after videos surfaced on TMZ and YouTube

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- NATO-led forces in Afghanistan denounced a video purporting to show a Marine sniper team urinating on dead bodies, saying Thursday the actions appear to be the work of "a small group of U.S. individuals" who are no longer in the country.

The statement appears to indicate that military officials believe the video is real, even though the Marine Corps says it is still working to verify its origin and authenticity.

"A video recently posted on a public website appears to show U.S. military personnel committing an inappropriate act with enemy corpses. This disrespectful act is inexplicable and not in keeping with the high moral standards we expect of coalition forces," the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan said in a statement.

"ISAF strongly condemns the actions depicted in the video, which appear to have been conducted by a small group of U.S. individuals, who apparently are no longer serving in Afghanistan."

WASHINGTON – Marine Corps officials said they are investigating a YouTube video that allegedly shows four servicemembers urinating on the corpses of Taliban fighters.

The video, posted Tuesday on YouTube , shows four men in U.S. military uniforms standing above the corpses, joking and making references to relieving themselves on the dead men.

Capt. Kendra Hardesty, a spokeswoman for the Corps, said officials have not verified any details of the incident but added, “The actions portrayed are not consistent with our core values and are not indicative of the character of the Marines in our Corps. This matter will be fully investigated and those responsible will be held accountable for their actions."
