Assault vehicle fire kills Marine in California

CAMP PENDLETON, CALIF. — A Marine was killed this week during a training accident in the California desert when an amphibious assault vehicle caught fire, the Marine Corps said Wednesday.
Military officials identified the Marine as Cpl. Nicholas Sell of Eagle Point, Ore. Sell enlisted in May 2010 and was a member of the 3rd Assault Amphibious Battalion, 1st Marine Division. He deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom and received several medals.

Three Marine officers, including a battalion commander, were removed from their jobs Wednesday in the wake of a disastrous training accident in Nevada that killed seven Marines and wounded eight other troops, Marine Corps Times has learned.
Lt. Col. Andrew McNulty, commanding officer of 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, at Camp Lejeune, N.C., was dismissed along with two subordinates, Capt. Kelby Breivogel, commander of the battalion’s Alpha Company, and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Douglas Derring, the battalion’s infantry weapons officer. The decision was made by Brig. Gen. James Lukeman, commanding general of 2nd Marine Division, the battalion’s parent command, said 1st Lt. Peter Koerner, a spokesman.

SEATTLE -- Nine Soldiers were injured Tuesday morning in a military vehicle accident at the Yakima Training Center, according to a spokesman for Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Two of the Soldiers were seriously injured and airlifted to a nearby hospital but are in stable condition, said Joe Kubistek, a Lewis-McChord spokesman.
The other Soldiers were evaluated by medical personnel on scene, he said. They were treated and returned to duty at the training center.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A Fort Bragg soldier has been found dead in an Army training area in North Carolina.
Fort Bragg officials said the soldier was reported missing Tuesday morning after he failed to return to the assembly point after an exercise. His body was found after an intensive search of the Hoffman Training Area, about 50 miles west of Fayetteville.
His name has not been released.
Fort Bragg officials said the soldier was taking part in a land navigation test. The test is part of the Army’s Special Forces Assessment and Selection training. The training is the first step in becoming a Green Beret.
Officials said the cause of death is under investigation.
