Veteran ran into other veterans...in patrol car he crashed into

CHP vehicle rammed; catches fire during high-speed chase

June 28th 2019
"Deputy Stewart established rapport with the man by pointing to a miniature Combat Infantryman’s Badge (CIB) he is authorized to wear on his Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) uniform and he related to Mr. Devivo that he too was a combat veteran," Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey told News 10. "Mr. Devivo surrendered to Deputy Stewart and was no longer resistant to on-scene CHP or SCSO personnel.
Near HORNBROOK, Calif. — A male who had been driving over 130 miles per hour on Interstate 5 in Northern California was taken into custody by law enforcement on Friday afternoon after ramming his vehicle into a CHP patrol vehicle.

According to California Highway Patrol, around 12:30 p.m., officers were advised of a possible reckless vehicle driven by a United States Military Veteran, northbound on I-5 at a high rate of speed and possibly experiencing a mental health crisis.

The driver of the vehicle, 28-year-old Jesse Michael Devivo exceeded 130 mph with an officer in pursuit. According to CHP, Devivo made a U-turn on I-5 just north of the Henley Hornbrook and Copco Road overpass. Devivo was now facing the opposite direction and accelerated towards the northbound lanes. When a CHP officer attempted to block the suspect from re-entering the northbound lanes, Devivo rammed into the CHP patrol car causing it to catch fire. A witness helped extinguish the fire.

Deputy Stewart is a combat infantry veteran and former Army Paratrooper. He served with the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. Rob’s partner at the time was Deputy Michael Johnson, a retired U.S. Navy Chief and former Navy diver."

Fort Bragg "Captain America" Soldier Rescued Crash Victims

Bragg soldier pulls three from fiery wreckage after Chatham crash
WRAL News
May 19, 2015
"I took an oath to help serve the United States, foreign and domestic, so when I was there, I realized that I was the only one there at the time who could help.
CARY, N.C. — A Fort Bragg soldier is being hailed as a hero for rescuing three people after a weekend collision in eastern Chatham County.

A car and an SUV collided on O'Kelly Chapel Road near Cary on Sunday afternoon when, according to the State Highway Patrol, the SUV driver tried to pass another vehicle. "I heard the giant explosion. It sounded bad.

I got on 911 immediately without even seeing it," said John Spurrell, who was working in his backyard at the time. By the time Spurrell ran to the road, he saw the front of the car smashed in and flames erupting from the SUV, which was on its side.

He also saw a man in a Captain America T-shirt running into the fire to drag the SUV driver to safety. Army Capt. Steve Voglezon was off duty and on his way to a shopping mall when he came upon the crash.

Even though he has only basic first aid training, the missile defense officer said his instincts kicked in as he pulled the driver out by his belt and, together with three other people, carried him away from the wreckage. read more here

SNEADS FERRY, ONSLOW COUNTY
Two Camp Lejeune Marines pulled a man from his burning SUV after the victim was involved in a three-vehicle crash at the top of a bridge.

Cpl. David Qualls, 22, and Cpl. Nathan Bryson, 21, were leaving Camp Lejeune Friday morning when they pulled up to a traffic jam on the Highway 172 bridge.

They said they heard people yelling for fire extinguishers. That was when they realized a car was on fire at the top of the bridge. The Marines ran toward the top of the bridge and saw a three-car crash.

Inside the burning vehicle was 54-year-old Larry Flesher, a Camp Lejeune contractor from New Hanover County, according to Camp Lejeune spokesman Nat Fahy.

A Highway Patrol trooper said Flesher was headed north across the bridge toward Camp Lejeune when he crossed the center line and struck a vehicle. A third vehicle heading north across the bridge toward Camp Lejeune was also involved.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A local military veteran is recovering from a gunshot wound to the face after he was shot while trying to help others.

Ralph Tackett, 49, spent hours in surgery Monday.

"They got the bullet out, he's got three plates in his jaw, three titanium plates and he's going to need more surgeries," said Sandy Tackett, the victim's wife.

According to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office police report, Tackett heard a car crash outside his home on Fort Caroline Road Saturday morning. He got in his car to drive out and help when he saw the crashed Silver Pontiac Grand Prix and three men walking towards him, waiving him down.

"They asked him for a tire, he said 'a tire? I think you need more than a tire,'" said Richard Tackett, the victim's son.

The report states that's when one of the suspects shot him in the left lower jaw.

"They didn't ask for the car, didn't ask him to get out or anything they just shot him," said Sandy.

The handcuffing a Chula Vista firefighter at an accident scene has prompted a strong reaction among other emergency personnel across the U.S., specifically one 18-year veteran firefighter.

A California Highway Patrol officer detained the firefighter at the crash scene along Interstate 805 near Telegraph Canyon Road Tuesday night.

A car had rolled through construction, injuring two people. Chula Vista Fire Engineer Jacob Gregoire was detained after refusing to move Fire Engine 52 which was protecting medics working the scene.

A Chula Vista firefighter ended up in handcuffs at the site of a car crash Tuesday night. The California Highway Patrol officer said the fire engine was blocking the road, but the firefighter said it was protecting the crash victims. CHP and Chula Vista Fire met for a discussion on Wednesday. NBC 7’s Omari Fleming has the outcome of that meeting.

The firefighter, who we'll call Allen, wished not to be identified to avoid retribution but was compelled to give his take on what happened to Gregoire.

“It is shocking that the safety of a citizen or those of us rendering aid would be put in jeopardy just to have a lane in the freeway open,” Allen said.

Over fire communications you here another firefighter reporting what was happening.

Dark Horse Marine's wife in coma after losing all limbs

Marine With Brain-Dead Quadruple Amputee Wife Upset Over ‘My Girl’s A Vegetable’ Cadence
BY PAUL ON JULY 25, 2012

Camp Pendleton, CA – Troops running and singing cadence is a familiar scene at bases across the world, but one Marine says the cadence really needs to end.

Corporal Jason Andreesen is assigned to the famed ‘Dark Horse’ battalion — 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines.

“Every morning I have to wake up, put on my silkies and glowbelt and think ‘Well, here we go again’,” says Andreesen.

His reluctance for physical training (PT) comes not from exertion, but from the cadences that his squad mates usually choose. One in particular is referred to as the “Vegetable Cadence.”

“I mean, I thought it was kind of funny back when I first heard it,” says Andreesen, “but that was before I met Sarah. She’s my dream girl.”

Sarah is Andreesen’s wife of three years — who miraculously survived a car crash last year despite losing all her arms and legs and putting her into a coma.

Deputy loses both legs in crash of cruiser
Fellow officers saved his life

By Nancy A. Fischer

Niagara County Sheriff Deputy Allen Gerhardt, a decorated veteran who flew combat missions in Iraq, lost both of his legs when his cruiser crashed into a guardrail Monday night in Ransomville.

Gerhardt, 36, of Newfane, was listed in stable condition Wednesday after undergoing 5 1/2 hours of surgery Tuesday night.

The deputy’s family members say the quick action of officers who first arrived at the scene saved his life. As it turned out, both officers were members of the department’s emergency response team and both knew how to tie a tourniquet.

“I owe my husband’s life to them,” said Gerhardt’s wife, Tina. “They are 100 percent my heroes.”

“I can’t express our gratitude,” added his father, Steven A. “You can imagine how much blood you can lose with both your legs ripped off. If they hadn’t had tourniqueted him, I would have been making funeral arrangements right now.”

Retired Marine lost job, then car crashed into his house

In Woonsocket: A shooting, a crash and a ready Marine
01:00 AM EDT on Saturday, July 16, 2011
By Tatiana Pina

Journal Staff Writer

WOONSOCKET — Sandra Gagnon was washing clothes in the basement of her Robinson Street home Thursday night, with her dog, Tuffy, when she heard a popping sound.

Must be firecrackers, she thought. But it was followed by a big boom that shook the house “like an earthquake.”

When Gagnon peered from the laundry area, she saw the couch — which had been against the wall — now in the middle of the basement family room. Standing atop the couch was a man she didn’t know. He was bleeding.

Gagnon, 36, said Friday that she thought somebody was trying to rob the house. The man on the couch told her he had been shot. She didn’t care.

She had no idea what was happening, and the preschool teacher was worried about her family.

“Get the [expletive] out,” she told him.

Upstairs, Bradley Gagnon, a retired Marine, had been watching television with the couple’s 8-year-old son. Their daughter, 13, was in another room.

The Gagnons had already been planning to move from their home, Sandy Gagnon said, partly because they are not happy with their neighborhood and partly because Brad had lost his most recent job as a facilities manager. The crash kind of iced it for them, Sandy Gagnon said.

The bizarre chain of events started at about 2:30 a.m., when a security guard at the Hospital of Central Connecticut at Bradley Memorial on Meriden Avenue saw a car driving erratically through the parking lot, Sgt. Lowell DePalma said.

Rescue workers at the scene after a car plowed into a storefront where a Hannukah celebration was taking place.

Some of the injuries were severe, Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Tanksley said. Police said the 78-year-old man's vehicle crashed into a Woodmere, New York, storefront where Chabad of Five Towns was holding its Hanukkah Wonderland event.

Police said the driver, who hit a parked car before going through the storefront, is among the injured. There were no details available for the others.

Hospitals in the vicinity reported receiving adults and children, including two children listed in serious condition.

The event included menorah- and dreidel-making activities for children, according to the Chabad of Five Towns Web site.

Heshey Jacob, president of the Hatzolah Volunteer Emergency Medical Service, said the vehicle went through a play tent in the front of the building where children were playing and into the back of the store. Watch footage of the accident site »

Thirteen victims were initially transported to hospitals, he said, including one medevaced to Nassau County Medical Center. Another child, traumatized by the accident, was taken to a hospital later.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Every weekend for more than four years, Fred Murray has walked the road where his daughter, Maura, vanished. Family, friends and volunteers help him look in the woods and mountains near Haverhill, New Hampshire, for clues to what happened to her.

Maura Murray, a 21-year-old nursing student at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, disappeared on a cold and snowy night in February 2004. She was last known to be driving from Massachusetts through New Hampshire. It is still unclear where she was heading in her black 1996 Saturn.

The car was found abandoned, its front end crashed against a tree. It apparently had skidded off a road at a sharp curve.

Shortly after the accident, a passing bus driver stopped and asked Murray if she needed help. She said no.

Ten minutes later, police arrived. Inside the crumpled Saturn, they found some of Murray's belongings -- school books, running gear, snack foods and alcohol -- police won't say what kind.

But Murray was gone, along with her car keys and a backpack she always carried.

There was nothing to hint she'd be motivated to run away, according to her fiancé, William Rausch, and her father, Fred Murray.

Hero trooper is killed in car crash
By Brian R. Ballou
Globe Staff / July 24, 2008
A state trooper honored two years ago for helping to pull a woman from a burning car died early yesterday morning in an off-duty car accident less than 2 miles from his Hingham home.

According to the State Police, Gregory K. Porter, 33, hit a tree at the intersection of Central and Emerald streets at 12:36 a.m. Porter was the only occupant of his 2000 Hyundai Elantra. He was rushed to South Shore Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Porter, a married father of two, worked out of the Norwell Barracks, about 10 miles from the accident scene.

David Procopio, a State Police spokesman, said Porter's last shift was from 11 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m Tuesday, and that at the time of the accident Porter was on the first of his two days off. Procopio said the accident is under investigation by the Hingham Police Department and State Police and that a toxicology exam will be performed as part of regular procedure.

Authorities said that there was no indication that alcohol was a factor in the accident and that it was not certain yesterday if Porter was wearing a seat belt.

PINELLAS PARK -- A South Carolina mother was killed and four others were hospitalized in a police drug bust that went bad.

Officers with the Pinellas Park Police vice squad completed an undercover drug bust about 9 p.m. in a parking lot when the two male suspects involved in the drug buy sped away from a police maneuver attempting to block them in, said Capt.
