Homeless veterans file suit against Titusville
WFTV.com
TITUSVILLE, Fla. — A group of homeless veterans is suing the city of Titusville.
They group said officers raided their camps, then destroyed their property, including a family member's ashes.
"They came and took everything," said homeless veteran Ralph Deese.
Deese who, gets around with an artificial leg, said he remembers the day when the city took everything he had left.
"I asked how we can recover our property, they said, 'You can't. We've taken it to the dump,'" said Deese.
A lawsuit filed Monday says two years ago Titusville officials raided homeless people's camps without official notice ... and left them with no way to get their possessions back.
"I said, 'We're taking it down today.' They didn't care, said Deese.
Deese said officers even took his dentures.

Titusville homeless veterans lost everything including dentures and ashes
Florida and Texas are usually tied for second place for the states with the most veterans. To discover this happened here in Florida makes me very ashamed of our elected officials.

TITUSVILLE — Mayor Jim Tulley assured advocates for homeless veterans that he will try to get to the bottom of the circumstances surrounding the recent clearing out of 11 homeless camps on private property throughout the city.
Tulley said he met this week with City Manager Mark Ryan and Assistant Police Chief John Lau to discuss the issue and plans to resume those discussions next week.
He said he has heard conflicting reports from the homeless advocates and police about the removal and disposal of personal items the homeless people had in the camps.
Police say they gave residents of the camps warning that they were trespassing on private property and needed to leave. They also gave the homeless fliers with information about community resources, including the Salvation Army and the National Veterans Homeless Support organization.
Police also said they did not clear out homeless camps at sites where property owners did not mind if homeless people were there.

Homeless raid in Titusville questioned
It's one thing to want to get rid of homeless people but another to have a place for them to go. Where are these people supposed to go? People seem to forget that about a third of the homeless are veterans on top of it and most of them suffered after their service.

"This a veterans' town and this is a veterans' county, and they will not get away with it," Taylor said.
TITUSVILLE -- — Police have cleared out 11 homeless camps throughout the city in a push to remove people who are trespassing on private property.
Titusville Police Department and fire officials say the camps are a safety hazard, and a growing problem in the city, partly resulting from the increased unemployment.
But George Taylor Sr., founder and president of the Titusville-based National Veterans Homeless Support Inc., said he is concerned about the efforts to clear out local homeless camps.
