"Heroes" Rebuild Vietnam Vet's Sandy Wrecked Home
By: Vivian Lee
The Heroes at Home Campaign and Rebuilding Together NYC are repairing homes in Brooklyn damaged by Hurricane Sandy, all with the goal to make them and accessible for those living there.
Sawing wood is music to Vietnam veteran Michael Chirieleison's ears which, six months ago, were ringing with the sound of water rushing into his Red Hook house.
"I saw the waves going down, there had to be five foot of water in the street," Chirieleison recalled.
On Friday, a work crew was making his house liveable again. The materials and labor are thanks to Heroes at Home.
The program was hatched by Sears and the non-profit home repair group Rebuilding Together NYC to serve those who have already served.
"We identify veterans in need across the country who need home repairs, home upgrades, they've fallen on hard times, show a need. We go in there, make their homes warm, safe, accessible," said Brian Hanover of Sears' Heroes at Home.

Volunteers Work to Provide Wounded Iraq Vet With Custom Home
Volunteers Work to Provide Wounded Iraq Vet With Custom Home
By ALEXIS SHAW
July 25, 2012
After months of renovations, a wounded Iraq War veteran and his wife are ready to move into their new home, thanks to the efforts of a volunteer project that customizes homes for wounded veterans.
Capt. Patrick Horan was serving in Iraq in 2007 when he was struck by a bullet that penetrated his skull and exploded. Horan was airlifted from Iraq to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where doctors removed half his skull, said his wife, Patty Horan.
"He had trouble speaking, but he also had trouble with the motor function of his mouth, just forming the words," she said.
For the past five years, Horan and his wife have moved around the country to get Horan the care he needs.
At last, they have a permanent home of their own, near family members and care givers, in McLean, Va.
"This house symbolizes enjoying life and just starting anew," said Patty Horan. "We can actually live life again instead of living 10 hours a day in a hospital. That's what we've been doing for five years."
Funding for the renovations came from a $10 million grant the Sears' Heroes at Home program gave to Rebuilding Together, a national volunteer home rehabilitation organization, specifically for veterans' housing, said Lee-Berkely Shaw, director of development at the Montgomery County, Va., chapter of Rebuilding Together.

Sears Employees donate washer and dryer to disabled vet mom of six
Disabled vet gets washer-dryer surprise
By Brian McVicar - The Muskegon Chronicle via Associated Press

FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — When disabled U.S. Army veteran Zaneta Adams arrived at Sears in the Lakes Mall, she thought she was going to be participating in a customer survey to help the store gauge consumer tastes.
What the North Muskegon resident found Wednesday was something entirely unexpected — a free Kenmore washer and dryer paid for by employees from eight of Sears' Michigan stores. Employees from the stores pooled together their personal money and conducted fundraisers to purchase the appliances in honor of Adams’ military service.
"I wish my children were here," said Adams, a 32-year-old mother of six who broke her back at Fort Stewart, Ga. in 2005 when she fell off a 10-foot truck. "It's probably not going to hit me ‘til I get home."

Sears resolves rule violation in gift program in Heroes at Home Wish Registry
Sears resolves rule violation in gift program

The more than 10,000 military families who registered for the Sears “Heroes at Home Wish Registry” will be able to get their gift cards without violating Defense Department ethics violations, under an agreement reached late Thursday between Sears and defense officials.
Sears has also extended the registration period to Oct. 31, and will allow up to 20,000 service members to register, said Sears spokesman Tom Aiello.
The company has made adjustments in the program, such as expanding it to all active-duty members, including activated Guard and Reserve members. All ranks are now eligible, expanding it from the previous limitation to E-6 and below. Sears will validate the status of the service members with the Defense Department’s help.
Before the changes, the Defense Department warned Sears that the program violated ethics laws and asked it to stop registering service members.

Sears gift registry for troops violates rules
Well now this really stinks! Sears is trying to do a good thing for the men and women serving in the military and the military wants to stop them. Makes no sense at all. I really doubt Sears needs to advertise using the troops and only wanted to use some in uniform for this program alone. Don't they understand that the people of this country want to help the troops and the veterans as much as possible?

Defense officials have notified Sears that troops will not be able to participate in their “Heroes at Home Wish Registry” because they would be violating ethics regulations.
On Oct. 23, Sears Holding Corporation officials said they are working with defense officials to resolve the issue. “Sears is committed to supporting these military families and will not waver in that support,” said spokesman Tom Aiello.
Sears’ gift registry matches donations from the public with military members who registered for gifts at Sears.com through Sept. 28.
“After reviewing the available details of the Wish Registry, we determined that, as structured, participation in the Wish Registry results in an improper solicitation,” Leigh Bradley, director of the Standards of Conduct Office for the Defense Department General Counsel, said in an Oct. 14 letter to Sears.
