PORT ORANGE - PORT ORANGE -- In the mobile-home communities struck Friday night by a quick tornado blast, residents on Saturday were cleaning up the debris, installing tarps on their roofs and counting their blessings.

Officials confirmed that 63 homes sustained major damage or were destroyed by the storm that touched down around 6:15 p.m. in the Laurelwood Estates and Lighthouse Pointe communities. Another 91 homes sustained minor damage, including single-family homes in the Brandy Hills neighborhood.

Yet only one person suffered a minor injury, a woman cut by flying glass who didn't want to be transported to the hospital, said Port Orange Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Tonya Gilardi.

Saturday, officials from the National Weather Service toured the damage to confirm it was a tornado that struck. State emergency-management officials, city building officials and the county property appraiser's office also surveyed the damage. Port Orange Fire-Rescue crews conducted door-to-door searches and helped some residents install blue tarps on their damaged roofs.

Veterans: Show Some Respect For Flag Day

Veterans say to honor the flag is to pay respect to soldiers serving right now, those who have served and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

PORT ORANGE -- It was a small, but hugely important celebration outside the American Veterans 911 post in Port Orange.

The gathering was in honor of the stars and stripes.

"I have the deepest respect for old glory, the one that I fought for," said Vietnam veteran Rick Bernardani.

The 89-year-old Air Force veteran's step is a little slower than in the days he fought in World War II. But his respect for the American flag is steadfast.

Bernardani says others have lost that respect and that fewer Americans fly it on the day set aside to honor the flag.

"The younger people are not respecting it. They don't realize they wouldn't have the life they've got if it wasn't for us," said World War II veteran John Rugglas.

Those veterans say that it’s because of the respect that they hold for the American flag that they take issue with governmental agencies that do not fly it on Flag Day; like a Port Orange post office, or this Daytona Beach post office or even the Daytona Beach City Hall.

Fairgoers Catch, Save Toddler Dropped By Mom Dangling From Carnival Ride

Fairgoers Catch, Save Toddler Dropped By Mom Dangling From Carnival Ride
'Little Girl Completely Dangling Outside Ride,' Witness Says

POSTED: 10:52 pm EDT October 4, 2008
PORT ORANGE, Fla. -- A group of fairgoers caught and saved a toddler who was dropped nearly 40 feet from a carnival ride as her mother dangled above the crowd.

"It was very scary witnessing the mother hanging from the ride with her daughter," witness Leann Craft said. "The little girl was completely dangling outside of the ride."

Sheri Pinkerton became trapped when the Crazy Bus ride at a carnival in Port Orange started up suddenly as Pinkerton and children were getting off the ride.

"I heard a bunch of screaming and I looked over and the school bus had started to go back up as the mother was getting off with her little girl," Craft said. "She was pretty much caught. She was half in and half out. Her leg was caught up underneath the ride and she was holding on to her little girl."
