Charities providing retreats for wounded warriors who are burn patients, assembling a traveling museum of military children’s artwork, and sending Purple Heart veterans to hunt and fish in outdoor sporting events around the country are among the six diverse groups recognized in this year’s Newman’s Own award competition.

This year’s competition awards a total of $100,000 for the groups’ work to improve life in the military community, an increase from the total in previous years of $75,000.

The competition is sponsored by Newman’s Own, Fisher House Foundation, and Gannett Government Media Corp., which publishes the Military Times newspapers.

Since its inception in 1999, the Newman’s Own awards have recognized 145 programs with grants totaling $825,000.

Groups helping wounded troops in a variety of ways — sewing adaptive clothing, providing trained service dogs, connecting them with donors, establishing peer support groups, building new homes — are at the forefront of this year’s winners of the Newman’s Own Awards.

Eleven organizations received a total of $75,000 in grants, ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 apiece, for their efforts to improve the quality of life for the military community.

USA Together, a Web site that links wounded service members with donors, was the overall winner, receiving a $15,000 grant and a bust of Paul Newman, provided by Newman’s Own, which sponsored the competition, along with the Fisher House Foundation and the Military Times Media Group, which publishes Army Times, Air Force Times, Navy Times and Marine Corps Times.

Newman’s Own makes sauces, salsas, dressings and other foods, many of which are sold in commissaries. Founded by the late actor Paul Newman more than 26 years ago, the company has given all its profits — about $270 million to date — to charities, including military charities.

“My overwhelming message is to say thanks to all of you for doing this and for meeting the needs,” said Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, speaking to the charities during the awards ceremony Sept. 10.

Does your organization have an idea for improving the quality of life for service members and their families?

Submit your proposal to the Newman’s Own Awards competition, which will give grants totaling $75,000 to volunteer and not-for-profit organizations. This marks the ninth year of the competition, jointly sponsored by Newman’s Own, Fisher House Foundation and the Military Times Media Group, publisher of the Military Times newspapers and their Web sites.

The deadline for submitting proposals is May 2. The most innovative plan will receive $15,000. The remaining $60,000 will be divided among the other top-scoring entries, in varying dollar amounts.

To date, the competition has recognized 99 organizations with grants totaling $430,000. Last year’s winning entry was the Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation, which connects injured service members with communities that mobilize attorneys, financial counselors, real estate professionals and other volunteers to help service members with housing, transportation, employment, mentoring and ongoing support.
This year’s winners will be announced in August.
