Vietnam Vets Honored With 'Order Of Silver Rose'

To Those Affected By 'Agent Orange'

Two Vietnam War veterans were honored at the St. James Community Center on Friday night with the Order of the Silver Rose, a medal that recognizes veterans who have developed medical problems as the result of exposure to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam.

Friday night's recipients were retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Dale Neas, of Old Newport Road, Greeneville, and the late U.S. Army and Tennessee Army national Guard Sgt. 1st Class Ledmond "Huck" Huckleby of Silvan Circle, Greeneville.

In making the medal presentations, Bill Thomason, a retired U.S. Army master sergeant who lives in Parrottsville and coordinates the Order of the Silver Rose program for Northeast Tennessee, noted that Vietnam veterans are dying at a rate of about 290 each day, many from the effects of exposure to Agency Orange, a herbicide that was sprayed from the air onto jungle vegetation to deprive the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese of cover.

SIERRA VISTA — During a special ceremony on Sunday, nine Vietnam War veterans were recognized for their contributions and service to this country.

The Order of the Silver Rose is a medal awarded to veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange while serving in the Vietnam War.

In Sierra Vista’s first Silver Rose ceremony, presentations were made by Rose and Aaron Possien at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, where the victims of Agent Orange, in the presence of family members and friends, were honored. Three of the honorees were deceased; their medals were presented to a family member or close friend.

Aaron Possien is the Arizona state director for The Order of the Silver Rose, a nonprofit organization that not only honors the veterans who have been sickened or killed by Agent Orange, but strives to raise awareness about a wide range of cancers and other illnesses caused by exposure to the defoliant.

Local family remembers loved one at The Wall

A Warren County family recently attended a memorial service in Washington, D.C., to honor its fallen hero.

On April 20, Ronald Richard Fajbik was posthumously honored during a ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, commonly referred to as "The Wall," with his wife, Laurlie; daughter, Kim; son, Brian; and grandson, Darrin in attendance.

Ron passed away in on Nov. 20, 2005 following an illness as a result of his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. Herserved in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971.

The ceremony was a part of the In Memory program through the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which honors those who died as a result of the Vietnam War, but whose deaths do not fit the Department of Defense criteria for inclusion on The Wall.

"There was information via the web with the Veteran memorial fund," said Laurlie.

She submitted an application for the In Memory program and was accepted.

Laurlie and her family joined 122 other families for the ceremony.

"It was very emotional," she said. "It's rewarding to know there are people out there that do care."

In Warren County, she is the director of the Order of the Silver Rose, which recognizes and honors those who have been stricken with one of the 43 diseases connected with the herbicide Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam and parts of Korea.
