Ohio VA hospital records found at private home
Friday, June 29, 2012
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — The Dayton Veterans Affairs Medical Center is notifying 16 people that medical records containing their personal information were found at the former home of a now-deceased employee, drawing more attention to a hospital recently scrutinized amid allegations of poor hygiene at a dental clinic and improper conduct by an anesthesia unit employee.
The home's current owner found the boxed records in an attic and contacted police about two months ago, the Dayton Daily News (http://bit.ly/L6huGY ) reported. The police report indicated no one at the hospital knew why or how someone removed the records, which included birth dates and Social Security numbers.
Former Marine Angelo Arnold of Centerville said he learned about the problem this week in a letter from medical center Director Glenn Costie.
"This is a grievous injustice to veterans," the 51-year-old Arnold told the newspaper.
"Someone has to be accountable at the Dayton VA. This sends a message that certain VA staffers are very careless and reckless with our files."

Toledo, OH -
TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Tens-of-thousands of veterans in Ohio are supposed to be getting some money from the state, but so far they haven't applied.
Anyone who served in the Persian Gulf War or Iraq or Afghanistan is eligible for up to $1,500. Families of fallen soldiers could get up to $6,500.
Former Marine Brad Luderman says, "I'm sure there are a lot of people who don't know about it."
Luderman served in Iraq in 2003, 2004, 2005. When he got back he applied for the Ohio Veterans bonus money last October.
"When they first came out with it they said it would be within 8 weeks and here it is 5-6 months later and I still haven't got it," Luderman said. "But I'll get it eventually."
He says he just talked to program reps Tuesday and was told some more paperwork is needed. Despite the delay, he says the application is not hard.

McCain-Palin called Ohio Veterans "unqualified" voters
When it comes to veterans, there are two kinds of them in McCain's eyes. The ones who support him and the ones he can use. If he can't use them, they don't deserve anything. People need to understand it's not a matter of what McCain claims when it comes to veterans, it's what he does that matters. The more this nation finds out about McCain since he started running for the presidency, we find he is all talk, votes against veterans and cannot be trusted. If he's turning his back on veterans, he'll turn his back on anyone.
Editorial Column: Governor Palin Claims Ohio Veterans are Unqualified Voters

October 3, 2008 - Watching John McCain attack our veterans has become the norm these past few years, with his status as a symbol for the American veteran merely a weird plot twist in his history; We have watched him stand on the Senate floor for five-and-a-half hours, leading the fight against the dwell time amendment that would give our troops more time between tours. We have seen him speak out against the 21st Century GI Bill that would expand education benefits for our troops for the first time since the Senator himself used them to pay for college. Like a bizarro-world version of Mark Foley ruthlessly fighting pedophiles while being one himself, so goes McCain's inexplicable record on veterans issues.
But finally, he's put his mouth where his money is. McCain and Palin, who both have children in the Armed Forces, have declared Ohio troops and hospitalized vets unqualified voters.
I get emails from McCain's Ohio arm to try to keep an eye on what they're doing there, since the state will probably decide the election, but happens to have a Republican party establishment that would purge every voter without a butler from the rolls if it had the chance. This is what they sent out after the debate last night under Palin's name:The Obama-Biden Democrats and their allies are exploiting loopholes in Ohio election laws that we fear may result in unqualified voters casting ballots.go here to see what this is all about
