President Obama meets with winner of contest on how to reduce federal government waste

By Doug Beizer Dec 22, 2009
A Veterans Affairs Department clerk met with President Barack Obama at the White House Dec. 21 as a reward for her idea on how the VA can save money.

Nancy Fichtner, a support clerk at the VA hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., won the Securing Americans Value and Efficiency (SAVE) Award for her idea on how to cut waste at VA medical centers, according to the White House.

Partially used medical supplies, such as inhalers and eye drops, used at VA hospitals are thrown away when veterans are discharged, according to White House officials. Fichtner’s idea is to find a way to let patients to take those supplies with them after being discharged.

PTSD support group for wives forming in Grand Junction

Wives of soldiers experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder are forming a support group in Mesa County.

“We’re hoping to help the wives of veterans. They’re going through hell too,” said Phyllis Clugston, one of the organizers of the group.

Men who served in war who cannot escape the torment of what they’ve seen can be diagnosed with PTSD at Grand Junction’s Veterans Administration Hospital.

The soldiers who lived through a single or many traumatic events can years later experience hypervigilance, sudden rage, sleep disorders, substance abuse, flashbacks, anxiety, depression, a loss of trust, and more.

The goal of this group will be to support wives and relationship partners through education, communication skill-building, stress relief activities and social bonding.
The initial meeting of interested people will be in the week of Aug. 25.

Grand Junction VA plans PTSD seminars

I am posting this as large as possible because it is exactly what I've been screaming about all these years!

Seminars To Help War Veterans

Posted on July 8, 2008 by Rick Adams

The Grand Junction VA will hold seminars to help veterans and their families deal with a common post war disorder. Over the next few weeks, the V-A will hold 3 seminars to educate the public about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Each of the 3 meetings will have a seperate focus. Officials with the VA say health professionals will be available for the the last 2 to discuss treatment. Clergy members are encouraged to attend because officials say they are often approached by veterans who don't want mental health professionals. The seminars will be held every Wednesday through July 23 in building 6 at the VA on North Avenue.
