Cookie Monster Shipper Hits Troops for Girl Scout Treats

Soldiers who crave Girl Scout cookies hit with $20 online fee

“It sounds like they are running a scam,” the official said. “It's common knowledge that people ship Girl Scout Cookies to soldiers all the time.

America’s soldiers and sailors already risk their lives fighting for freedom, and now it turns out they pay a hefty surcharge to indulge in one of the most uniquely American traditions: Girl Scout cookies.

A policy the youth organization blames on its shipper charges a $20 premium for shipment of online orders to residents of Hawaii and Alaska, as well as "orders delivered to military addresses." And the extra charge applies whether the cookies are destined for fighting men and women on a base in Afghanistan or one in North Carolina, a quirk that has some members of the military enraged.

"It’s totally outrageous,” said retired Army 1st Sgt. Christopher Lenker, who brought the price police to the attention of FoxNews.com. “I’m not sure how charging our military so much more is really necessary.

An eagle-eyed vet noticed the fine print stating that service members would have to pay hefty premium fees for Girl Scout cookie delivery.

"I think their policy really stinks," he added.

Can Girl Scouts donate cookies to military personnel serving overseas?

Girls may participate in a council-approved "Gift of Caring" or "Cookie Share" program that allows girls to collect donations of cookies for military personnel serving overseas. Any gifts in quantity to military overseas should be coordinated through the military or related personnel at both the place of origin and the place of receipt. Large shipments should be coordinated by the local Girl Scout council to assure that the cookies arrive where intended. Gifts should not be sent to U.S. bases or bases overseas where USA Girl Scouts Overseas (USAGSO) is involved in product sales. Girl Scouts should observe council jurisdiction when selling or marketing product for a gifting program.

Fallen airman's daughter send cookies and love to the troops

Her Girl Scout cookie project wins praise from top general
By Meg Jones of the Journal Sentinel

Waukesha - Mackenzie Frost's dad loved Girl Scout cookies, especially peanut butter sandwiches.

When U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Christopher Frost was deployed to Iraq, he received Girl Scout cookies in the mail and even sent a photo of himself holding up a cookie. So when 8-year-old Mackenzie sold Girl Scout cookies this year for the first time as a Brownie, she asked her customers if they would be willing to donate boxes of cookies to send to troops in Iraq.

The second-grader wrote a note for each package introducing herself, explaining which Brownie troop she belonged to and how she came up with the idea. She also told the U.S. service members in Iraq that the cookies were a great way to remember her dad.

Christopher Frost was killed in a helicopter crash in Iraq in March 2008 when Mackenzie was 5.

Touched by her heartfelt letter, as well as the 600 boxes of Girl Scout cookies sent by Mackenzie and the rest of the girls in Waukesha Brownie Troop 2653, the U.S. service members decided to say thank you the best way they knew how.

They sent her a care package.

And on Tuesday afternoon, in front of her classmates at Hawthorne Elementary School in Waukesha, Mackenzie was presented with gifts sent from troops in Iraq - a U.S. flag flown over Iraq in Christopher Frost's memory, a large framed photo collage and a video greeting from a three-star Army general who is deputy commander of U.S. forces in Iraq.

A new low:Girl Scouts robbed as they sell cookies outside store

Girl Scouts robbed as they sell cookies outside store
Reported by: Aubrey Mika Chancellor

Two little girls and their troop leader were robbed outside a North Side store Wednesday night. The Brownie troop leader became emotional as she told News 4 WOAI how she witnessed the thief steal from the two 3rd graders.

"They didn't take it from me. They took it from my girls," the troop leader said.

The 9-year-olds had set up and sold their cookies at the Walgreens in the Medical Center several times before, and everything had been fine. But Wednesday night, a man stole all of their hard-earned money.
