Florida Veterans Needing "maintenance” medications Beware

VA pharmacy to stop filling prescriptions on base

Northwest Florida Daily
Jim Thompson
November 7, 2017
EGLIN AFB — Officials say the pharmacy at the Department of Veterans Affairs outpatient clinic at Eglin Air Force Base is not closing.
By late next year, however, prescriptions will no longer be filled there. Veterans who need prescriptions filled will eventually need to do so through either private pharmacies or through the mail.
The VA pharmacy’s transition to a “first-fill contract” means that prescriptions for medications that a veteran needs immediately — deemed medically necessary by the prescribing physician — will have to be filled through local retail pharmacies.
As opposed to those “emergent” prescription needs that will be filled by private pharmacies, veterans’ “maintenance” medications — prescriptions for chronic long-term conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol — will continue to be provided through the VA’s mail-out pharmacy services and sent directly to veterans’ home addresses.read more here
One more step in killing off the VA? Wonder who is making out on this deal because it sure as hell isn't our veterans!

Florida Disabled Vietnam Veteran and Family Need Help Now

Disabled veteran, family say movers ‘showed up' with no notice to evict them from St. Cloud home

WTFV 9 NEWS

A veteran’s advocate stopped by the home  and has put Malave, who is a Vietnam veteran with severe nerve damage, into a program to help find his family a new home.
ST. CLOUD, Fla. - For four years, Robert Malave says he has rented his home in St. Cloud without a problem.
That changed Thursday when movers and a realtor showed up, tore the locks off and started throwing his family’s belongings on the front lawn, Malave said.
“They savagely came in here, like we were being robbed, just throwing stuff,” Malave’s daughter Stephanie said.
The property had recently gone into foreclosure and the new owner was trying to evict the family without the 30-day notice required by Florida law, Malave said.
His wife rushed home from work when she heard what was happening and had to be taken to the hospital after she collapsed from the stress, Malave said.
“All I was thinking about was them, my daughters and my granddaughter, and now my wife is lying in the hospital,” he said, crying. “I don’t even know how she’s doing right now.”

Shocking! You Don't Have to Be A Veteran To Drive Like You Are?

Veteran wants proof you deserve that military license plate
Tampa Tribune
By Howard Altman
Tribune Staff
October 31, 2015
Earlier this month, Connie O’Dell went to the department of motor vehicles office in Ruskin to get a new license plate for her husband, Navy veteran Mike O’Dell.

As a result, O’Dell is on a new mission — trying to change how plates commemorating the five branches of the armed services are issued in Florida.

O’Dell says his wife saw a Navy license plate, asked if she could purchase it and was told she could — even though she was never in the Navy and didn’t have to show discharge papers or any other proof that she served.

O’Dell said he did some research and found out those are indeed the rules. But he wants them changed.

“I asked at least three or four dozen veterans since then and none of them were aware that the people driving around with those license plates weren’t necessarily in the service,” said O’Dell, who served in the Navy from 1971 to 1973. “They were not happy to find that out. We served our country. We deserve those plates. Those who did not, don’t deserve those plates.”

The bigger issue, O’Dell said, is concern that non-veterans with nefarious intent might try to pass themselves off as veterans. He said civilians who want to show their support should get a “supporter” plate instead.

One veteran on a mission helped 500 South Florida veterans

One veteran's mission to honor other veterans
Sun Sentinel
By Attiyya Anthony
December 27, 2013

Long retired from war, Tom Kaiser's current battle is to get every veteran the honors they've earned.

Kaiser, 86, a Delray Beach resident and World War II veteran, has helped more than 500 South Florida veterans receive government awards and medals for their military service.

"My goal is to get to every veteran an honor as long as I breathe," he said.

Kaiser honors veterans from World War II to those who have served in Afghanistan at the Boynton Beach Civic Center or Veteran's Park in Boynton Beach.

Many of the World War II veterans are pushing 100 and some have age-related illnesses, like Alzheimer's and dementia. Still, Kaiser won't give up.

Leuchter is a Holocaust survivor, who made it out by joining a French resistance group before moving to America to serve in the Korean War. Leuchter thanks Kaiser for helping him get the award.

Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall May Stop Traveling

Traveling veteran wall may stay permanently
ABC News
July 10, 2013
Posted: July 10, 2013

CHARLOTTE COUNTY
The Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall that attracted over 80,000 people to Punta Gorda in 2009 may be coming back for good as soon as next year.

During an emotion city council meeting Wednesday, a group of vets urged leaders to support bringing the monument to Laishley Park – council members supported the idea.

"Why did we survive and others didn't? It's a question you just can't answer," said Chuck Weinberg, a Vietnam veteran.

Weinberg says seeing the name of his comrades serves a stiff reminder that his memory should never go unforgotten.

There's a problem when it comes to getting the monument to Southwest Florida though, and like many blocks in the road, it has to do with money.

UCF Operation Giveback drew huge crowds

UCF Operation Giveback drew huge crowds
by Kathie Costos
Wounded Times Blog
May 11, 2013

This morning I was out at University of Central Florida for the Operation Giveback Run for wounded warriors. It was a fabulous turn out.

As you can see in some of these pictures a lot of companies sponsored the event.

I met the founder of My Warrior's Place Kelly Kowall. Her son Corey was killed in Afghanistan.
A Mom's mission to help vets and soldiers grieve Kelly Kowall needed a sign. She didn't want a nebulous sign subject to the interpretation of the moment. She needed something serious, something strong. Kelly stood on a beach and asked God for a “burning bush” sign. Then a large caliber bullet washed up at her feet.

She is featured in this video report.

Publish Patriot Videos

I just started a new blog to hold the videos I film for Veterans Events here in Florida as well as new videos I find. Publish Patriot will be the place to find my videos after they are posted here. Don't worry! Wounded Times isn't going anywhere! It was created to try and clear up this blog because after last year when I filmed over 40 events it got way too crowded to hold all of them. Publish Patriot is all about these patriots and will only have videos on it. Hope you link to it as much as I hope you like it!

U.S. Air Force Sergeant with PTSD, reunited with Black Jack

Robert Moreland, retired U.S. Air Force sergeant with PTSD, reunited with Black Jack, his stolen dog
Dog had been used in dog fighting ring

By: Alex Sanz

ROYAL PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A retired U.S. Air Force sergeant who has lived with the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was reunited on Thursday with the dog who had helped him through some of the darkest days of his life; the two had been separated for more than 10 months.

Robert Moreland, 71, was reunited with Black Jack, the two-year-old German Shepherd he adopted in 2010, after what he and others described as a difficult ordeal.

Black Jack, Moreland said, had helped him cope with PTSD after two decades of service in the Air Force, years of racial discrimination in the United States and a difficult transition home after he left the military.

"PTSD is one mother," Moreland told WPTV NewsChannel 5. "It wipes you out. Every time something goes wrong, it beats you to death."

Last April, Moreland said someone took Black Jack from his home in Miramar, near Fort Lauderdale.

"I said, "Father, this will be the last dog I ever have. And, somebody stole him," Moreland said. "It hurt me to my heart."

92-Year-Old Florida Veteran, Arrested Again For Violent Attack

Joe Hogan, 92-Year-Old Florida Veteran, Arrested Again For Violent Attack
Sun Sentinel

A 92-year-old war veteran is incarcerated for the third time since 2011 for allegedly setting off a violent attack against others, this time his 70-year-old wife.

Joseph Hogan on Friday remained in a Broward County Jail's medical facility after he was arrested on Thursday for allegedly pushing his 70-year-old wife to the ground and shoving her face against the concrete floor outside the couple's home in Hollywood, according to court officials.

He is facing one count of battery on a person older than 65.

Hogan's public defender, W. Dale Miller, said Thursday's incident is the latest in an ongoing saga of a 92-year-old man who appears to be in need of help over his increasingly violent behavior and deteriorating mental health.

Broward County Judge John "Jay" Hurley called the case "unique" and appeared perplexed during a bond court hearing on how to handle the jailing of a man in his 90s who may be suffering from dementia.

"The court is not inclined or comfortable jailing a 92-year-old man," Hurley said. "At the same time, this 92-year-old man now has two felony cases, and I feel that at least in the short term, it seems he's becoming more violent."

Healing begins at new VA clinic in Cape Coral

Healing begins at new VA clinic in Cape Coral

If Bay Pines VA Healthcare System’s goal was to impress Southwest Florida’s veterans with its new outpatient clinic opening Monday in Cape Coral, well, mission so far accomplished.

Hundreds of veterans, their family members and local officials have offered rave reviews of the new $53.1 million facility during its several open houses this fall. Given that the new health center is three times the size, and much more modernly designed, than the closing clinic in Fort Myers, it’s not hard to see why.

But now the hard work of healing begins for the 200,000-plus Gulf Coast veterans the center will potentially serve — a group that is increasingly younger, more diverse and, for those newly returned from Iraq and Afghanistan, in need of the intensive mental health and medical care.

Veterans on Honor Flight return to welcoming crowd

DAYTONA BEACH
Hundreds of World War II veterans from across Central Florida descended on Washington for their final Honor Air Flight.

Early Saturday morning, veterans from Volusia and Flagler counties met at Daytona Beach International Airport where they hopped aboard a chartered jet.

It was the tenth and final Honor Air Flight put on by a trio of rotary clubs in West Volusia County.

Over the past five years, volunteers raised more than $800,000 to send just over 1,000 veterans to the various war memorials in their honor.

“Well, this'll be the first time that I could, what you call, bear going up and looking at that wall. Because I've got quite a few friends up there,” said Charles Hargrove, Sr., a veteran.
v Hargrove fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Florida veterans has millions of dollars unclaimed

Our daughter grew up with cable TV and the Internet. My husband and I met while working for a cable company. It was really odd when I was taking Digital Media classes at Valencia College and had to explain to the younger students (my daughter's age) that when I was growing up, we actually had to get up to change the channel on the TV, typed on paper with ink ribbons and had to white out typos instead of just using delete on the keyboard. Spell check was called the dictionary.

When Vietnam veterans came home, and all the generations before them, finding out what benefits they earned for their service was really hard for them. It was even harder to be able to find their "brothers" and "sisters" for emotional support.

Claims were a nightmare as well and everything was done with regular mail. Thank God the DAV was there to help with filing claims because most veterans had no clue what to do including my Dad, a Korean War veteran.

Times have changed but what has not changed is what this country owes our veterans. Yes, owes our veterans because they paid for it all when they put their boots on and left US soil to fight the battles this country decided had to be fought.

Florida veterans group on mission to deliver benefits
FDVA: Millions of dollars unclaimed

FLORIDA TODAY

Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs on Wednesday launched a statewide multimedia campaign to connect veterans with millions of dollars of federal and state benefits that they’ve earned but are not claiming.

The nation’s third-largest population of veterans collects than $13.7 billion a year in federal compensation, education and pension benefits, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs medical services and military retired pay, according to FDVA, but apparently millions more is available.

“I think it’s a very proactive approach,” said Bill Vagianos, president of the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center. “Hopefully, we’ll see an improved process. It needs to be more veterans-focused instead of so bureaucratic.”

The outreach campaign will use everything from traditional newspaper advertising to a new website and smartphone app to reach out to different generations of veterans, from World War II to those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Some of Florida’s veterans fought for our freedom in the days before television, while others never knew a time without personal computers, yet they all share the admiration of a grateful nation,” said Mike Prendergast, executive director of FDVA. “If they aren’t receiving the benefits and services they rightfully earned, we must use every approach available to reach them and set things right.”

They did their jobs. Making sure they get what they need when they come home is our job now.

Florida is blessed with a lot of groups and a lot of people doing whatever it takes to make sure that happens for our veterans and Bill Vagianos has been tied to most of what is taking place for Florida veterans.

I met Bill when he was working to take care of homeless veterans for Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. This man hardly ever stops. If he is involved in anything, you know it'll work.
