Vietnam Veterans of America giving back to others for Easter

Veterans giving back to veterans

FOX 2 News
April 21, 2019

Detroit, (FOX 2) - Members and volunteers of Vietnam Veterans of America were spreading some springtime cheer this past Easter weekend.
The day started with delivering care packages to patients at the VA Medical Center in Detroit.

"It's our way of giving back, to tell them thank you and we appreciate them," said Vietnam Veteran of America member, Paul Palazzolo.

The organization does this twice a year. Members and volunteers say back scratchers are always the most popular item.

The survey also found that 81 percent of firefighters fear they will be seen as weak or unfit for duty if they talk about the emotional toll of their job, and 87 percent said it keeps them from getting the help they need.

DETROIT - A survey conducted by NBC New York and the International Association of Firefighters found that firefighters are battling more than just fires.

Firefighters struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health issues.

"We suffer from the same challenges the general public does -- financial issues, marital issues. Now you compound that with the horror that we see every day, day in and day out. It adds up and eventually takes its toll," Jim Brinkely of the International Association of Firefighters said.

Ninety-five percent of the 7,000 surveyed said they experience critical stress on the job, and three quarters of the the firefighters said it leaves them with unresolved issues. Many of them, 71 percent, have trouble sleeping, and 65 percent of them are constantly haunted by bad memories.

"We're no different than someone on the battlefield [with] the death and the destruction that we witness," Derrick Foxhall, a 20-year-veteran of the Detroit Fire Department, said.

Detroit VA Bought 300 New TVs, Forgot About Hooking Them Up?

Report: Detroit's VA hospital misspent money on TVs
Detroit Free Press
Todd Spangler
August 10, 2016

WASHINGTON – Officials at Detroit’s Veterans Affairs hospital were coming under close scrutiny Wednesday after federal inspectors reported this week that the facility misspent more than $300,000 on TVs for patient rooms, which couldn’t be installed without spending more on a design change.

More than that, the report from the Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Inspector General found that despite having purchased the 300 TVs and related accessories 2½ years ago, the vast majority of them remain in their boxes, even though their warranties expired more than a year ago.

“By purchasing these items well before a construction contract to install them was awarded, the facility exposed itself to unnecessary financial risk,” said the report, which was released Tuesday. “As of June 21, 2016, the facility had not yet awarded a contract to install these TVs.”

Officials at the hospital, formally known as the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center, issued a statement saying they concurred with the inspector general’s findings and recommendations to improve purchase contracts and to consult with legal counsel to determine if rules were broken.

In recent years, the VA nationwide has come under fire for a series of problems, including reports of long waiting lists at some hospitals for veterans to receive treatment and officials trying to make scheduling deficiencies look better than they were. Last year, questions were also raised as VA officials acknowledged they had spent billions on private medical care without signing contracts with providers.

Take Me Home Huey Sculpture At Henry Ford Museum

FOX 2 News
JUN 29 2016

(WJBK) - A Huey helicopter that was turned into an art installation has arrived at the Henry Ford Museum. The helicopter arrived Wednesday morning, escorted by dozens of motorcycles. The 47-foot long sculpture called Take me Home Huey is part of a mission to help those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Steve Maloney, the artist of the project, says this project brings notice to those who served not only the Vietnam War but all other conflicts, too.

Detroit Neighborhood Says No To Veterans, Yes To Dogs?

Can't top this one for right after Veterans Day! It seems a neighborhood in Detroit prefers to be able to walk their dogs than take care of veterans.
“This development would further curtail what many Woodbridge residents use as a dog-walking path and ski trail,” members of the Woodbridge Citizen Districts Council wrote to the Detroit’s City Planning Commission, objecting to the relocation of the Veterans Foundation

While the neighborhood organization states it’s “supportive of the mission” of the veterans foundation, the proposed center doesn’t belong in the community, the group argues.

Some veterans hired on spot at job fair

Some veterans hired on spot at job fair
June 29, 2012
By Michael Martinez
The Detroit News

Ivy Scorzelli grudgingly came to Detroit's Veteran Job Fair Wednesday at the urging of her husband, John. They both left Thursday overjoyed — and ready to move to Texas for her new job.

The couple, who both served in Afghanistan in the Army Reserve, have been without work since they returned in March. But now the 26-year-old is ready to start a position in human resources for the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs in Austin, and she couldn't be happier.

"I love the uniform, but I'm ready to take it off and look cute for work," she said.

Scorzelli was part of a fortunate group who found employment on the spot at the three-day job fair at Cobo Center. While final numbers were still being calculated, 10,000 total veterans were expected to walk through Cobo's doors for approximately 25,000 jobs nationwide.

The event, billed as the "mother of all hiring fairs," attempted to put a dent in Michigan's 11 percent veteran unemployment rate.

The roster of local employers included Detroit's Big Three automakers, online home lender Quicken Loans Inc., Big Boy restaurants and Two Men and a Truck, a Lansing-based moving company. National companies included General Electric, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Sears, Home Depot and Edward Jones.

The Veterans Affairs department and Aaron's furniture store were two entities that were able to hire on the spot.

Dad of soldier killed in Iraq burns flag to protest lowering for Whitney Houston

Dad of soldier killed in Iraq burns flag to protest lowering for Whitney Houston
By: Corey Williams, The Associated Press
Posted: 02/20/2012

DETROIT - John Burri lost a son in Iraq and believes lowering flags to half-staff should be done to commemorate those who gave their lives in service to the United States, not celebrities like Whitney Houston.

On Saturday, the 60-year-old spent $12.95 on a 3-by-5-foot replica of New Jersey's state flag and burned it on his outdoor grill in protest of Gov. Chris Christie's decision to mark Houston's death by lowering flags in her native state.

"This was a person who was a great entertainer and a great voice," said Burri, who lives in the city of Wyoming in western Michigan. "But this was not someone who gave their life and shed their blood for our country."

Army Specialist Eric Burri was a gunner on a Humvee when he was killed in 2005 after an explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Baghdad. Then-Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm ordered flags lowered in his memory.

DOD supports military families? Not this one

You'd think that the DOD understands the struggles military families have by now, especially with all the reports we've been reading, but then read this and know when it came to needing support, this growing family didn't have any.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - "How (are we) going to take care of our family because it affects us a lot," said Krystal Jones.

She is worried. Her husband is 22-year-old Darnell Jones -- a private serving with the 101st Airborne Division in Afghanistan. It has been his dream since he was 15 years old. He had just re-enlisted in the Army. They were supposed to move to Germany, but now he's being kicked out instead.

"They always promote family, and it's like they're going against everything they stand for," Krystal Jones said.

You see, Jones was home on leave in metro Detroit back in February when doctors told his pregnant wife she needed to have an emergency delivery. FOX 2 was shown a letter requesting that Jones be there. This was serious so the soldier asked for additional time at home, but was denied.

"My son made a decision to stay home until his son was born safely and with all intentions to return and they're calling it AWOL," said concerned mother Ericka Jones.

War weapon becomes life saver in TBI research

Other symptoms of TBI include headaches, difficulty remembering or concentrating, fatigue, mood changes, sadness or anger and dizziness. Many of these are also symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. But now, researchers say that some of those PTSD cases could be TBI.

TBI studied in lab equipped with cannon

DETROIT — The doors are locked.

“Testing!” shouts Dr. Pamela VandeVord, an assistant professor at Wayne State University. She stands back, holding her hands over her ears, bracing for another explosion.

Brain research sounds like the height of academic aloofness, filled with arrogant intellectuals wearing white lab coats in a pristine environment, pondering the meaning of life while listening to Beethoven.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

At Wayne State University, in the biomedical engineering department, brain research is done by researchers wearing blue jeans and T-shirts, working in an old laboratory that looks like an auto shop. It’s more rock ‘n’ roll than classical music.

The research is loud, powerful and exciting — and the topic is relevant: Wayne State has been chosen to receive a $778,000 grant to figure out why so many troops are coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan with brain injuries caused by roadside bombs.

New York abandons Vietnam Veteran who served this nation

"Patty Murray becomes voice of veterans care"

We have a military veteran friend who was honorably discharged during the Vietnam era. He served in the US Navy while having dual citizenship (Canadian/US). He was born in Canada and his family moved to New York when he was a child and became dual Canadian and US Citizens. After discharge my friend worked in the US for over 3 decades, paying US taxes and Social Security. When it came time to retire and apply for his pension he was informed that the US Department of Homeland Security had revoked his US citizenship and did not recognize his Canadian citizenship. The Social Security Administration will not begin his pension payments until his citizenship issue is resolved. He has been trying to work this matter through the VA, his local representatives in government (congressional level) and directly through the Social Security Office. No one seems to know what to do, who should take action and who has responsibility. The DHS will not reply to his inquiries. Any ideas?

You would think that with all the talk about how important our veterans are they would never allow something like this to happen, but it happens too often.

This veteran served this nation, paid taxes and is not able to collect Social Security. The excuse in this case is Homeland Security. Why? Why would Homeland Security get involved in paying what this veteran earned?

I hope the veteran contacts this site so that we can get to the bottom of what happened or that RoseCovered Glasses will contact me with a name. Until then, maybe it would be a good idea for RoseCovered Glasses to contact the following. There isn't much that can be done without a name or a story to go with it.
