Indie beat Coast Guard rescue for Navy Veteran

Navy vet survives 300-foot fall from Mount St. Helens
ABC 7 News
Tuesday, July 17, 2018
As a Navy vet, Fintel joked by saying, "Oh crap, I'm being saved by Coasties."

Brittany Fintel knows she cheated death after falling more than 300 feet while climbing Mount St. Helens.

The 32-year-old Omaha, Nebraska native and Navy veteran lost her footing while climbing the 8,663-foot volcano in Washington state.

"The first thing that hit the boulder was my hip," Fintel told KATU. "Then I flipped over that and hit my head, and then kept literally rolling down until I naturally stopped."

Fintel's German Shepherd, named Indie, was the first to reach her after the fall. She said Indie helped by laying beside her and comforting her.

A nurse and search and rescue volunteer who were nearby were able to radio for help. Five hours later, a Coast Guard helicopter arrived to airlift Fintel.

Alaska accident killed former Sen. Ted Stevens, injured former NASA Chief Sean O’Keefe

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A video released Thursday shows survivors of the plane crash that killed former Sen. Ted Stevens being loaded into a Coast Guard cargo plane and treated during a flight to Anchorage.

The video, released by the Coast Guard under a Freedom of Information Act request made by the Associated Press, doesn't shed new light on the crash that killed Stevens and four others, but it is the only known imagery immediately after last month's crash in rural Alaska.

A preliminary National Transportation Safety Board report on the Aug. 9 crash did not identify a cause.

The 16-minute-long video shows three of the four survivors being loaded into the plane in Dillingham, Alaska, which was the largest city near the crash site. The other survivor was transported privately to Anchorage later, said Coast Guard Petty Officer David Mosley.

Associated Press

SABINE PASS, Texas — A helicopter with five people aboard crashed into the Gulf of Mexico on the way to an oil rig early Thursday, and rescue crews have picked up one survivor and continue to search for the others.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Renee Aiello said the Coast Guard was alerted at 9:47 a.m. by a call from the helicopter leasing company Rotorcraft Leasing Co. LLC of Broussard, La., which reported that the pilot had not checked in as scheduled.

A rescue helicopter crew found one adult male and debris in the water about two miles off the Texas coast. The man is alive but his condition is unknown, Aiello said.

"We know there was an event that took place; we're still in the process of searching," said Gerald Golden, director of operations for Rotorcraft. "Once we learn anything, we'll be in a position to give more details."

U.S. Reps. Loretta and Linda Sanchez of California say their brother Henry and his girlfriend are the two boaters the U.S. Coast Guard is searching for today off the coast of San Pedro.

The sisters said in a statement that a debris field found off the coast contained fragments from the boat their brother was aboard with his girlfriend, Penny Avila.

"Our family is thankful of the search and rescue efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard and other local agencies," the congresswomen said in a statement. "We pray and hope that Henry and Penny are found alive and well."

The Coast Guard says Sanchez, 51, and Avila, 48, both of Santa Ana, left Alamitos Bay near Long Beach at midnight Wednesday en route to Santa Catalina Island and never arrived, said Ensign Stephanie Young of the Coast Guard station in San Pedro.

Freighter crew safe after riding out Hurricane Ike

Ship's crew of 22 endures night without power in Gulf of Mexico

Coast Guard, Air Force had to abandon rescue because of poor conditions

Authorities onshore find it too dangerous to respond to calls for help

(CNN) -- A freighter that had been adrift in the Gulf of Mexico made it through Hurricane Ike safely and was awaiting a tugboat to bring it to shore Saturday morning.

All 22 people aboard the Antalina, a Cypriot-flagged freighter, were safe, U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Mike O'Berry said Saturday.

The freighter rode out the storm until the heaviest of winds died down Friday night, O'Berry said. It remained 170 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas, waiting for a motor tugboat to bring it back to port, he said.

Aircraft from the Coast Guard and Air Force were sent Friday afternoon to try to rescue the crew of the freighter, which is loaded with petroleum coke, a petroleum byproduct.
But high winds forced the military to abort the rescue, O'Berry said.
The Coast Guard then instructed the freighter to contact it each hour. It also told told the crew to turn on the ship's emergency radio beacon so its position could be monitored, O'Berry said. Watch the Coast Guard conduct a rescue operation »

Rescue of Winter Park father, son after hours in ocean 'a miracle'

Rescue of Winter Park father, son after hours in ocean 'a miracle'

A veteran with the Volusia County Beach Patrol called it "a miracle."

A 46-year-old Winter Park father and his 12-year-old autistic son were swept out to sea and endured more than 12 hours in ocean waters -- much of it apart from each other -- before being rescued Sunday morning.

"Fifteen hours floating in the ocean -- the probability of detection decreases substantially," said Petty Officer Jorel Wester, a Coast Guard officer from Ponce Inlet who had been involved in the rescue.

After Walter Marino and his son Chris went missing in the inlet Saturday, the Coast Guard launched an extensive search, including the use of a 47-foot rescue boat, water scooters and helicopters.

Coast Guard pair's quick action leads to massive search, rescue of sailor

Coast Guard pair's quick action leads to massive search, rescue of sailor
By Maddie Hanna
Globe Correspondent / August 25, 2008

Most days, Chris Flaherty and Patrick Yetman clean boats at the Green Bay Coast Guard station in Wisconsin and baby-sit the radio, listening for calls of distress that don't often come.

But last Sunday, the 22-year-old best friends from South Boston answered a call that mattered: an empty sailboat adrift in Lake Michigan, the man who had steered it missing for hours.

The report began a rescue process that spanned seven hours, drew seven boats and two helicopters, and sent Flaherty and Yetman onto boats with night-vision goggles as crews cut different search patterns through the dark lake. After hours of circling, searching, and scanning came the second important call of the night, this one from a Coast Guard helicopter: "We have a survivor in the water."

Man drowns in 3 to 5 feet of water while playing football at Long Beach

NEW YORK (AP) -- Rescuers suspended their search Sunday for a 10-year-old girl in the water off Coney Island, one of three swimmers still missing from powerful ocean currents at New York City and Long Island beaches over the weekend.

Some authorities said the spate of swimmers being swept away seemed unprecedented.

Four other victims drowned at local beaches Friday and Saturday, authorities said.

The search for the girl was suspended Sunday afternoon pending further developments, Coast Guard Cmdr. Gregory Hitchen said.

Akira Johnson was pulled under by currents while swimming with her cousin Saturday afternoon. Her cousin, Tyriek Currie, also 10, was rescued.

The children's grandfather, Charles German, went to the beach Sunday to watch the search effort. He said the family was doing as well as could be expected.

With a steady punch of stronger rip currents possible over the weekend, "only experienced surf swimmers should enter the waters," said National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Connolly.
