BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - These are hard stories that can be very difficult for us regular civilians to understand.
"We ended up being in a mine field... he hit a mine and had a vest full of grenades. One of those went off and he pretty much died instantly," said combat veteran Harry Franco.
Horrific visions of war that can be hard to talk about, but never leave the mind. The memories can have lasting effects on how combat veterans cope once they return home.
Being on full alert 24/7 for months or even years can change the mind's ability to cope with normal stress.
