It's called warm water therapy, offered by a San Diego nonprofit called the Wave Academy.
Of the more than 2.5 million military men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, it's estimated up to 35 percent came home with post-traumatic stress disorder. Samantha Bywater is one of them.
The Navy veteran spent 10 months in Afghanistan working as a prison guard and returned home haunted by what she had seen.
"It's been an internal battle, invisible wounds that not too many people can see," she said, describing her battle with PTSD. "Angry, just full of rage, couldn't sleep, I wasn't a civilized human anymore."
But Bywater has found relief from her symptoms with something she credits with saving her life.
"It feels amazing, I love this, every time I get into the water it's like Christmas all over again."
