HOPEWELL — Jeremy Marshall was at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center when he saw something that stuck with him.
“I was driving at the VA and saw a veteran off the side of the road and three cops around him. He was sitting on the sidewalk and they were hovering over him,” said Marshall, director of Ontario County’s Veterans Services Agency. “I looked at the situation and thought maybe this guy had a lot of issues going on ... and they were kind of hovering over him, which maybe wasn’t good.”
With that in mind, Marshall contacted Sheriff Phil Povero and out of that came a veterans awareness training program for law enforcement. It will be held at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 13 at the county safety training facility in Hopewell.
Sponsored by the Veterans Service Agency, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Academy, the goal of the training is to increase front line law enforcement awareness of veteran-related issues and what can be done to help.
