A Dothan resident and veteran of WWII’s D-Day invasion was one of the special guests at a fundraiser for active duty military and veterans on Friday evening.
Jack Byers, of Dothan, will turn 90 in December. And while he remembers plenty about his days in the 1st Infantry Division of the Army, D-Day was a tougher memory.
Byers served in the Battalion C, with the 33rd Field Artillery.
He remembers barbed wires and water and fear, he said. Plenty of fear.
Much of the rest was simply a very long time ago.
But Byers said life is good these days, so he came to throw his support to other veterans and active duty soldiers by attending an event at Cowboys of Dothan.
The event featured three motorcyclists who plan to ride 10,000 miles across the country to raise money for two organizations.
One of the organizations, Cigars for Warriors, sends cigars to troops at war to boost morale and give them a chance to relax and unwind. The other, Veterans Outreach, provides assistance to vets by helping them assimilate to civilian life, assisting them with finding employment and providing help with anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.
