Military officials are investigating a shooting at Camp Lejeune, N.C., on Tuesday, where a Marine gate guard killed a colleague with his service rifle.
The incident appears to be accidental and is not being considered an act of terrorism or an active-shooter scenario such as last week's deadly rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, the base said.
Officials referred to the shooting as a negligent discharge — and not intentional.
According to an official news release, the incident took place around 5:30 p.m. at the Camp Lejeune main gate. A Marine standing guard at the gate discharged an M4 rifle.
Officials said the slain Marine's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
