MARCH 2014 list #2 - Upcoming military, veterans and patriotic events in Central Florida

Tico Warbird Airshow – Fri, Sat and Sun March 14, 15 and 16 – Vintage and modern warplanes in action at the Space Coast Regional Airport in Titusville on the east coast of Florida.  Also a night show, live entertainment, antique cars, displays and more.  This year is a Salute to the Tuskegee Airmen.  www.vacwarbirds.org 
 
Sochi Paralympics continue to Sun. March 16.  Check your Cable TV schedule for NBCSN (NBC Sports Network) for late night Live coverage and on Saturday evening on NBC.  If you are having Curling withdrawals then fix it by watching the Finals of wheelchair curling.  Paralympic competitors have various physical challenges due to birth, accidents or war.  Of 80 athletes representing the U.S., 18 are either military veterans or active duty service members and include former Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard members.  Two athletes are still on active duty. The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) Paralympic Military & Veteran Programs provide post-rehabilitation support and mentoring to American servicemen and women who've sustained physical injuries such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation, visual impairment/blindness and stroke. Veterans are introduced to adaptive sport techniques and opportunities through clinics and camps and are also connected with ongoing Paralympic sport programs in their hometowns.
 
USO Supporters Meeting – Mon Mar 17 – 5-6:30 pm.  Continued updates on the new USO facility to be at Orlando Int’l Airport. Opening is tentatively scheduled for this October 1.  These meetings discuss fund raising and the significance of USO.  Meeting at Heritage Hall, 1775 Celebration Ave, Celebration, FL 34747. 
 
Honor Flight Welcome Home – Sat. Mar 22 – 25 veterans of WWII and Korea will make the Honor Flight to Washington DC.  The single day will be spent visiting the WWII, Korea, and Vietnam War Memorials, Marine Corps Iwo Jima and the Air Force Monuments, and witnessing the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.  The veterans and their assistants will return at about 9:15pm.  Come welcome these former warriors home at Orlando Int’l Airport!  Free parking has been arranged at an off airport property.  Contact Cathy Haynes for details -  chaynes11629@yahoo.com  407-239-8468.
 
USMC Sgt. Mecot Camara Fence Installation – Sun. Mar 30 - Honoring the memory of this warrior who was one of the casualties of the bombing of the October 1983 Beirut Barracks bombing.  220 Marines, 18 sailors and three soldiers were killed in what VFW Magazine called “the highest loss of life for the Marine Corps in a single day since D-Day on Iwo Jima in 1945.”   4pm, Sommerville Kids Klub, 1665 EE Williamson Rd, Longwood, 32779.  Celebration immediately following at Mulligan’s, 165 Wekiva Springs Rd, Longwood, 32779.   Info: Elisa Camara Thompson - elisathompson7@gmail.com  www.americanbrother.us
 
Army Rangers Breakfast - First Sat of each month local past and present Rangers, their families, and friends gather informally at IHOP located at 647 E. Colonial Dr., Orlando. (Summerlin and Colonial Dr. (CR50) just east of I-4.)   Just for friendship, laughs and storytelling mixed with a little truth!  Special Forces, Navy Seals, Force Recon, Pararescue, etc. are also welcomed.  Contact Richard Nelson for time and details - rnelson134@cfl.rr.com
 
Orlando Veterans Transportation Service. VTS is currently making daily round-trip runs from the Daytona Beach VA Clinic to the Orlando (Lake Baldwin) VA Medical Center with a stop in Orange City and Sanford.  For more information and to pickup, call 1-800-922-7521 ext 2052.  Please call 48 hours in advance of need. Please note that VTS will only make stops in Sanford when there is a scheduled pick up.
In addition, veterans with transportation problems and need to go to the James A. Haley (Tampa VA) Veterans Hospital may use the daily shuttle.  Physician referrals for required to use this resource.  You MUST call to schedule at 407-629-1599 x1347; x1287, x1288, or x2052.  The shuttle van leaves the Orlando VA Med Center site at 8am and leaves the Tampa site at 2pm to return to OVAMC.
 
Tax exemption - Combat-Wounded Veterans are entitled to additional homeowners’ property tax exemptions, but you must file for it. If the veteran is 10% or more rated for disability, the exemption is equivalent to that rating.  If the vet was previously denied for not being a Florida resident upon enlistment, then file for it again.  The Florida Legislature clarified the requirements that took effect in 2013.  Call your county of residence Veterans Service Office to make an appointment; take your DD214 for evaluation.  You will receive a document/letter of verification that you will need to file with your county Property Tax Appraisers’ office.  Ad Valorum taxes are still applicable to the home.
