Veteans with PTSD feel betrayed by loss of trusted leader

Our View: VA should rethink counseling decision

Northeastern Louisiana veterans received well-deserved recognition and thanks during the past week’s Veterans’ Day festivities.

Parades, ceremonies and celebrations are an appropriate show of appreciation.

But those events happen once a year.

Unfortunately, many veterans have issues that impact the quality of their everyday lives.

More than 100 of our local veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder have found a trusted counselor, Mitchell Young, who has led their support group for the past 16 years.

They were more than distressed recently to learn the Veteran’s Administration wasn’t renewing its contract with Young, who is also a veteran who himself suffers from PTSD, which gives him a unique perspective on those he counsels.

“Dr. Young is a Vietnam veteran and is uniquely qualified to handle us and our problems,” veteran Eddie Edwards said.
