Tribute to the Troops delivers messages of deep gratitude

"We said in a very loud and clear voice, 'We noticed. We care that there's an empty spot in your home, an empty seat a your Thanksgiving table,"" he said. "(The family's) sacrifice didn't end with a flag-draped coffin."

Riders, including Rockie Lynne, roll into Statesville during a Tribute to the Troops ride.

Rockie Lynne likens it to "a sniper shot from 7,000 miles away."

And just like coming under enemy fire, the physical and emotional wounds suffered by returning troops can be debilitating or deadly.

"We concentrate a lot on the families of those who have lost their battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other emotional disorders," said Lynne, the country musician who is from Statesville and co-founded Tribute to the Troops.

The nonprofit's mission is to protect the memory of those who have died in service to their country, and to show support to their surviving loved ones.
