Homeless veterans prove what we do for each other matters

Are you as tired as I am of Congress more interested in politics than doing their jobs? I have a feeling you are. Tired of the media playing on what divides us more than they are interested in what we do for each other? I am. I am also tired of the national news skipping reports on our veterans.

While most people have no clue how many veterans are trying to heal from PTSD, including the media because they get the numbers wrong all the time, they are also clueless on our homeless veterans as well as how more members of communities all across the country are stepping up to help them.

If you are in need of some feel good news on what Americans do best, here you go. These are some of the events just in October.

Roscoe Johnson served four years in the U.S. Air Force before he became homeless. The 38-year-old veteran is ready to get his life back on track and said the Veterans Stand Down event on Thursday, Oct. 10 would help him with guidance.

"This will turn my life around and help me straighten out my life," Johnson said Tuesday on "First Look with Scott Cox." For the 15th year in Kern County, the Stand Down will provide homeless veterans with basic needs such as clothing, grooming and food. But it will also provide support in VA and Social Security benefit counseling, referrals to healthcare, housing, employment and substance treatment, among other benefits.

BELLEVUE, Ky (WKRC) -- Homeless veterans are getting some much needed help at a Stand Down event Friday.Many veterans have a hard time transitioning from military to civilian live. Some have fallen on hard times and they don't know where to start to turn their life around. At the Bellevue Veterans Club, Tri-State veterans are getting eye exams, medical and dental exams, personal hygiene items, counseling, haircuts, clothing and a good meal. All services are free. On Wednesday, September 18th the 2013 Central Valley Veterans Stand Down kicked off. Dozens of providers were on hand providing outreach including WestCare California's own San Joaquin Valley Veterans program. The three day event took place at the VFW Post 8900 in Fresno, CA. This video highlights the events of the first day and its opening ceremonies.

The Stand Down is a national event created to reach out to veterans who are homeless. Local organizers say the term "stand down" was created during the Vietnam conflict to describe the and relaxation time troops were allowed away from combat. The event is supported by donations, a grant from the Veterans Affairs Department and volunteers.

Helping hands provide clothes and food to homeless vets

Advocates for the Huntsville area's homeless have been changing the emphasis in the supplies they bring the area's street people… to keeping them warm.

The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs says in 2012, there were about 800 homeless veterans in the state on any given night. In Huntsville, a 2011 report by the Department of Housing and Urban Development states about 714 homeless people were in an emergency shelter per night. Of that number, 93 were homeless veterans.
