A new wing opened Monday at the Dallas VA Medical Center to meet the growing needs of veterans with multiple, complex injuries.

The $4.5 million polytrauma unit will provide care for thousands of young veterans injured in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, where blast injuries have been common.

Most of the veterans who will be treated at the new wing are victims of polytrauma, the term used to describe a combination of physical injuries and mental health problems.

Common injuries include amputated limbs, damage to the spinal cord, traumatic brain injuries and psychiatric disorders.

“When they come back home with these injuries, they can have trouble with socialization and getting back to their families. It’s not the way they used to be,” said Dr. Clark Gregg, chief of staff at the Dallas VA.

The aim of polytrauma services is to give these recent war veterans “the best possible reintroduction into our society,” Gregg said.
