Army, Navy suicides at record high
The deaths are now occurring at a rate faster than one per day. On Nov. 11, confirmed or suspected suicides among active-duty forces across the military reached 323, surpassing the Pentagon's previous high of 310 suicides set in 2009.
Of that total, the Army accounted for 168, surpassing its high last year of 165; 53 sailors took their own lives, one more than last year.
The Air Force and Marine Corps are only a few deaths from record numbers. Fifty-six airmen had committed suicide as of Nov. 11, short of the 60 in 2010. There have been 46 suicides among Marines, whose worst year was 2009 with 52.
From Standard Examiner, Associated Press Air Force Suicides up 16% in 2012 The Army, by far the largest of the military services, had the highest number of suicides among active-duty troops last year at 182, but the Marine Corps, whose suicide numbers had declined for two years, had the largest percentage increase - a 50 percent jump to 48. The Marines' worst year was 2009's 52 suicides.I spent the rest of the day going thru the DOD website Press Releases and found nothing on the other branches. Where is the data? Why hasn't it been released so that it can be verified? Where did Associated Press get the data from and why can't anyone else find it? Wasn't all of this supposed to be transparent?
The Air Force recorded 59 suicides, up 16 percent from the previous year, and the Navy had 60, up 15 percent.
Sorry but not putting much faith in the press or the DOD at this moment because I also checked back on their Causality releases and could not verify the accounts.
As for the other branches of the military, that report came from a Marine Corps Times report
Chiarelli: Suicide a nationwide problem
By Patricia Kime - Staff writer
Posted : Wednesday Jan 16, 2013
The figures exceeded the Pentagon’s own internal projection for the year of 325, according to the AP.There is no real fact checking going on from the media or watchdogs. Sorry folks but it isn't happening. When you have major news sources not even bothering to fact check themselves and revise data, that is a huge issue!
Chiarelli, who was instrumental in instituting the Army initiative to publish its suicide numbers each month, said the American public should question what’s happening in society as a whole regarding mental illness, treatment and stress.
“Yes, the U.S. Army and the services have gone through a highly stressful period and 12 years of war, and we’ve seen a small segment of people that have an elevated suicide rate, but it pales in comparison to the 34,800 people that kill themselves in this country every year and the number that hospitalize themselves from an attempt — 160,000 to 170,000 a year,” Chiarelli said.
In 2012, the Army had 182 active-duty suicides, the Marine Corps, 48; the Air Force, 59 and the Navy, 60, according to the services.
As you can see, I managed to change my reporting on it, but they haven't. They still don't have all of them and I doubt they ever will.
Where are the other reports?
