Man who died in Springfield house fire was veteran who had been homeless

Before a Springfield house fire claimed his life, Ronald Moore had been homeless.
He was also — according to an advocate for the homeless — a veteran.
The Rev. Larry Rice said Moore, originally from Bloomington, Ill., had participated in a training program at the Veteran’s Coming Home Center on Jefferson Avenue in 2010.
Referencing Moore’s application for the six-month program, Rice said Moore was a U.S. Army veteran.
The house at the corner of Fort Avenue and Walnut Street was occupied by several formerly homeless veterans, said Melissa Smith, a homeless woman and Moore’s longtime friend.
