Newly married couple Evelyn and Scott Brown go from the VA Medical Center chapel to their reception, also inside the VA Medical Center. Evelyn Pano married Scott Brown while Scott is getting extensive treatment for cancer at the VA Medical Center.

Scott Brown married his sweetheart Saturday in the chapel of the hospital where he has spent days and nights fighting for his life.

Brown, an ex-Marine, and Evelyn Pano, both of Grand Island, Neb., pledged loyalty to one another in sickness and in health at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Omaha. In this case, that vow was far more than formality.

Nurses and staffers at the veterans’ hospital on South 42nd Street have come to know and adore the couple over the past year-and-a-half, treating Brown first for cancer in a knee and now for cancer in his pelvis.

So touched by Brown, 28, and Pano, 31, are those who work on the seventh-floor cancer ward that they made their own commitment a few weeks ago. They would organize and pay for the couple’s wedding.

“We just love them,” said one of the nurses, Gayle Reyes. “They are wonderful people, and they’re easy to help.”
