A U.S. Marine corporal who survived a combat tour in Iraq died Friday night when state police said an elderly man driving the wrong way on the Mass Pike slammed head-on into his car.
Robert Magee, 28, was on his way to Chicopee for reservist training, according to his family, when state police said the wrong-way driver, 84-year-old Clarence Lux of New Britain, Conn., collided with his car near Exit 6 in Ludlow at about 8:30 p.m.
Both men were taken to Bay State Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead, state police said. No injuries were reported for those in the other two vehicles involved in the four-car crash. About 15 minutes before the crash, police received “numerous” reports of a car driving on the wrong side of the road, but state police said they were unable to locate the vehicle. Trooper Todd Nolan said authorities believe it was Lux’s car.
