Widow of Marine killed by OC deputy gives birth

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- The widow of a Camp Pendleton Marine who was killed by an Orange County deputy last month has given birth to a baby girl.

Family friend James Webb says the daughter of Marine Sgt. Manuel Loggins Jr. was born healthy at about 3:30 p.m.

A $1,000 donation made to the family of a Camp Pendleton Marine sergeant killed by a sheriff's deputy Feb. 7 in San Clemente led to a call for compassion and closure Wednesday at San Clemente's Park Semper Fi.
Master Gunnery Sgt. Jay Michael Auwae, who was Sgt. Manuel Loggins' senior staff noncommissioned officer at Camp Pendleton, attended a check-passing ceremony in civilian clothes and on his own time to express support for community efforts to help Loggins' widow and children. Loggins' wife, Phoebe, gave birth Sunday to a baby girl, Hope. The couple also had three other children.

Family of Marine shot by OC deputy files claim

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- An attorney has filed a claim on behalf of the family of a Camp Pendleton Marine killed by an Orange County sheriff's deputy last month.

The claim filed Wednesday says the shooting of Marine Sgt. Manuel Loggins Jr. was not justified, and the two daughters who watched him die were held against their will for 13 hours.
