EVANSVILLE — A Mount Vernon, Ind., man who slashed two Downtown Evansville bar owners with a knife early Friday morning told police he was having problems because of his military service in Iraq, according to an Evansville Police Department report.
James E. Whitney, 32, was arrested on preliminary charges of aggravated battery with a knife, two counts, and intimidation with a weapon, two counts. He was being held without bond at the Vanderburgh County Jail.
Police said the incident happened about 2:25 a.m. at Hammerheads Bar, 317 Main St., when bar co-owner Christopher Boone tried to break up a verbal dispute between Whitney and another customer. Whitney then pulled out a knife and began slashing at Christopher Boone and co-owner Ryan Boone, who came over to help his brother, according to police. The Boones also reported that Whitney threatened to kill them.
