Last week I was one of a group of Vietnam veterans who were asked to go on a trip to the Vietnam Veterans Wall in D.C. for the Veterans Day services.

This was funded and run by the Honor Flight Network. They usually take WWII vets to the WWII memorial. They have been responsible for taking over 60,000 WWII vets to the WWII monument, 750 of them from Long Island. I met our group of vets from Southampton at MacArthur Airport. It was there I was told that they had a motorcycle escort provided by American Legion riders & P.G. Riders, the East Quogue F.D.hung a flag on the Sunrise and Southampton P.D. gave a few cars for escort. Nice start for those guys.

We were flown to Baltimore and a bus was to pick us up and deliver us to D.C. I thought it would have been nice if it was non-stop to D.C. but hey the price was right and I was just happy to be going. We arrived in Baltimore and told to let the passengers off first. I thought, "Just like the service. Hurry up and wait."

As we left the ramp from the plane and turned the corner there was a sea of Midshipmen, Marines, Army and Air Force members shouting out at us 'Welcome Home!'
