MELBOURNE — Jeff Heiser didn’t realize there was a name for the problems that plagued him following his military service in the 1970s until his son was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after his fifth deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Heiser and fellow filmmaker Kevin Shah hope their movie, “Return, but No Escape,” raise awareness about the affliction impacting an untold number of people.

“These guys have come back and they seem fine on the outside, but no one has addressed their insides,” said Heiser, a Merritt Island resident. “Return, but No Escape” details a fictional soldier’s struggles after returning from war in Afghanistan, said Shah, who lives in Palm Bay.

Heiser and Shah have been filming the scenes across Brevard County. The next shooting will be Sunday on Melbourne Causeway, where they plan to film what Shah described as a pivotal scene in the movie, when the main character contemplates suicide.
