BOSTON — Veterans in Massachusetts will soon have the option of having the word “Veteran” appear on their driver’s licenses or state identification cards.
The Registry of Motor Vehicles already puts the designation on license plates, but beginning in January veterans can have it added to their driver’s license at no extra cost during the normal renewal process.
Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray said Tuesday that it would be another way to increase awareness about resources available to residents who served in the military.
Secretary of Veterans Services Coleman Nee said the designation will make it easier for veterans to take advantage of discounts and other incentives they have earned. He also said it could help to identify and provide services to veterans in emergency situations.
There are nearly 400,000 veterans in Massachusetts.
