Adrian Simone is a hero. He didn’t hit the winning home run, throw the crucial touchdown pass, score the final goal, record a hit record or star in a blockbuster movie but he is nonetheless a hero, a real hero.

On Aug. 24 Lance Corporal Simone, 19, was in Afghanistan serving the people and the country that he loves. He had been there for about a month when, while out on a foot patrol mission, he was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED), also known as a roadside bomb.

According to his mother, Landi Simone, the area had already been scoped out by bomb-sniffing dogs and metal detectors.

"I guess the Taliban is getting more sophisticated in placing the IEDs," she said because moments later her son stepped on a bomb that left him seriously injured.

Adrian was Medevaced out to a hospital in Afghanistan where he was stabilized. Then he was taken to another hospital in Afghanistan before being flown to a hospital in Germany. Finally he was taken home to the U.S., to be cared for at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, MD.
