For 24 hours this weekend, the Taunton Area Vietnam Veterans Associations will pay tribute to 1,683 American service members who remain unaccounted for in southeast Asia.

The 29th Annual POW/MIA Vigil in Taunton starts at noon today at the Vietnam Memorial, downtown on Church Green. The ceremony will conclude on Sunday at noon, with remarks from several guest speakers, including local dignitaries and a special guest who was the last person to talk to a soldier from Massachusetts who remains missing in Vietnam.

“We’re not going to give up,” said Dennis Proulx, vice president of the Taunton Area Vietnam Veterans Association (TAVVA). “We’re going to keep going until they are all back. It may not happen but we can’t stop. We’ve got to keep trying. The whole purpose is to keep people aware of the situation.”

The TAVVA encourages everyone to come out and support the cause.
During the vigil, the name of a service member who remains missing in action will be called out at each half hour. Participants in the ceremony will place a dog tag and a flag around the Vietnam memorial fountain for each of the MIAs.
