PORTLAND, Ore. -- Dozens of Sailors were sickened by E. coli bacteria after the Bremerton-based submarine tender USS Emory S. Land's drinking water was contaminated by water from the Willamette River.
Thirty-four Sailors and eight civilian mariners got sick, but no one has been hospitalized, the Navy told Portland's KPTV.
The ship is drydocked at the Cascade General shipyards on Swan Island for repairs. It was towed there from Bremerton to because no dry-dock space was available for a 644-foot ship in the Puget Sound area, Navy spokesman Tom Danaher said.
