Vietnam vets welcome a belated thank you in Wisconsin

Vietnam vets welcome a belated thank you
Jim Stingl In My Opinion

After so many years, it sounds strange to say that Wisconsin's Vietnam veterans will be welcomed home from the war.

Is this still needed? Do the vets from this unpopular war continue to feel unappreciated?

An event called LZ Lambeau is planned for May 21-23 at the home of the Green Bay Packers. LZ is military speak for landing zone.

It is indeed a welcome home theme, and it's open to everyone.

Dozens of 'Nam vets attended a kickoff on Tuesday at the Harley-Davidson Museum. They heard that LZ Lambeau will feature reunions, exhibits, concerts, military vehicles, the Moving Wall replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and awelcome home ceremony in the stadium that requires a ticket. A motorcycle ride to Green Bay will cross Wisconsin from La Crosse. (For more details visit LZLambeau.org)

It's being run by the state Department of Veterans Affairs, Wisconsin Historical Society, Wisconsin Public Television and numerous veterans organizations. "Wisconsin Vietnam War Stories" documentary and book will be featured.

Soldiers from this war were treated harshly or dismissively upon their return to the United States. But in recent years, it seems that the Vietnam vets always get the biggest applause in the parades I've attended. It's like we're trying to apologize for our shameful behavior in the past.
