Navy joins effort to reach hiker in Mount St. Helens crater

Mount St. Helens, Washington (CNN) -- The U.S. Navy on Tuesday will try to help rescuers reach a hiker who fell and slid 1,500 feet into the crater of the Mount St. Helens volcano, authorities said Tuesday.

Air support from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington was headed to the site where Joseph Bohlig, 52, fell on Monday, according to Sheriff Dave Brown of Skamania County, Washington.

The Navy's "hope right now is that we're going to get a break in the weather, and we'll be able to get the helicopter into the crater and locate this individual and get him out of there," Brown said at a news conference.
