Vietnam Vet Gets Purple Heart 40 Years Later

ORLANDO -- It took 40 years and a chance encounter for a former Marine to finally get the Purple Heart award for wounds he got in Vietnam.
Steve Silverman was a lance corporal when he was wounded in June 1969. Over 40 years later, in front of his fellow Marines Saturday at the Armed Forces Reserve Center in Orange County, he was finally awarded the Purple Heart.
Silverman said he was attending a memorial some time ago, when a fellow Marine approached him and told him he was the man who picked up Silverman and put him on the rescue chopper in 1969.
