It turns out this is a Spicebush Swallowtail
Discussion A grand and beautiful butterfly, the Spicebush Swallowtail takes nectar from Joe-Pye weed, jewelweed, and honeysuckle. Like black female Tigers, it mimics the Pipevine Swallowtail.
It turns out this is a Spicebush Swallowtail
Looks like they have to change what these eat,,,sand and dog poop
Way off normal topic here, but I was in the pool this morning trying to unwind. My dog, a 13 year old Golden, had a bad case of diarrhea. I cleaned it up and took care of him but when I got back to the pool this butterfly was hovering around the area.
I kept watching it, thinking it would fly way soon, but it didn't. It hung around long enough for me to go back into the house and grab my camera.
I thought I'd get a couple of pictures if I was lucky, but it didn't seem to want to leave.
Then I started filming it, amazed at what I was watching.
Between the time it started flying around and the time I stopped filming, it was over 20 minutes. I gave up filming before it gave up eating.
I still have no clue what it was eating but I kind of hate to think what was there just seconds before. Lesson for the day, you don't need a butterfly garden when a dog works just as well.
