She lost her husband, neighbors save her home
By Theron Zahn
PUYALLUP, Wash. - A local woman lost her husband to cancer and was slowly losing her home - until a group of neighbors decided they weren't about to let that happen.
On Saturday, neighbors and volunteers organized by the Puyallup Police Department rallied to make over her home and her overgrown yard.
Jean McKay says she has lived in the house for decades.
"I was driving by one day, and I seen it, and I went, 'I want that house,'" she remembers.
That was 47 years ago. She and her husband bought the home, which was originally built in 1894.
Then her husband passed away, and the house and yard got away from her. After a while, the home was covered in overgrown shrubs and peeling paint.
"It just built up till there was just so much of it, you just can't do it," McKay says.
But not anymore. On Saturday a volunteer group swarmed Jean's house, cutting back the brush and brushing on a new coat of paint.
She even got some new front steps.
