Mount Airy -- Ron and Jean Meely stayed up late Friday night, working to make sure a 200-pound pig would be roasted in time for a Saturday picnic.

It was important to them, not only because they were cooking for the Mount Airy 4 Counties Lions Club, but also for a group of wounded veterans visiting from Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

This is the second year the Meelys and the 4 Counties Lions Club have hosted the picnic and pool party for the veterans.

The pig was so big it didn't fit on the equipment they used last year, so they had to hire professional help. But they were still out there late at night, making sure everything wasn't getting drenched in the rain.

A veteran came up and thanked Ron Meely for taking the time to roast it.

"Obviously, at the hospital, they don't get that kind of food," Ron Meely said. "He said he hadn't had that type of food for many, many years."
