Group of veterans hold their own protest

PITTSBURG — Call it a protest of the protest — or at least the location of the protest.
Close to 20 local veterans literally turned their backs on Wednesday’s “Tax Day Tea Party,” which took place at Pittsburg State University’s Veterans Memorial Amphitheater.
For the duration of the “tea party,” the group stood in a line and wore signs that read “This Is Hallowed Ground,” a reference to the memorial.
“When we heard that this gathering was going to take place and heard it was going to be at the memorial, many of us were disturbed by that,” Army veteran Rick Fulton said. “Those veterans served as Americans. They didn’t serve as Democrats or Republicans or Independents, but as Americans.”
Fulton said the veterans who demonstrated were not members of any particular group, but were individuals who shared a common belief.
“We all agreed on one thing, and this is the Veterans Memorial should honor Americans,” he said. “It shouldn’t honor people of one political party or another.”
The nationwide “tea parties” were billed as non-partisan events, but not everyone bought into that claim.
“I can claim the sky is orange,” said Army veteran Bob Roberts. “That doesn’t make it so.”
