KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Authorities say a West Point cadet from Tennessee found dead in a hotel room on Monday near the New York campus apparently took his own life.

Joe Tombrello, a spokesman for the U.S. Military Academy, said Thursday the death of 22-year-old Alfred “Alfie” Fox of Knoxville remains under investigation.

But the Knoxville News Sentinel reports military officials have told the boy’s family it was an apparent suicide.

A memorial service will be held Friday at West Point, and a funeral will be held Saturday in Tennessee.

Billy Fox said his son “was just a fantastic kid who excelled at everything he did. Any time he was around people, he was happy.”

Fox was a junior at West Point on track to graduate in 2010 with a double major in psychology and Russian.
