SARASOTA - A 2-year-old boy drowned Tuesday after he wandered from his home in the 2300 block of 21st Street and apparently fell into nearby Lime Lake.
Angel Avila was discovered missing by his parents, Shara and Angel Avila, just after 4 p.m.
After a search of the home and the surrounding area, the boy was found unconscious in the lake, a few yards away, at the western end of 21st Street.
Neighbors say they became aware of the drowning when they heard screams coming from the lake. Angel Avila had found his son, pulled him from the water and was trying frantically to resuscitate him.
Emergency responders arrived and continued to work on the boy inside an ambulance. The parents stood outside and waited for news.
About 5 p.m., deputies talked to the boy's mother, Shara Avila, and she began wailing while a friend comforted her.
