Two Fremont police officers who rushed into a burning apartment to rescue an unconscious woman have been awarded the state's highest public-safety award by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The actions of Officers John Anderson and Brian Shadle last year saved the woman's life, said Schwarzenegger, who awarded each of them the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor and a plaque at a ceremony in Sacramento on Tuesday.
The officers were conducting a traffic stop at Mowry Avenue and State Street the morning of Nov. 1 when someone ran up to tell them about an apartment fire around the corner at 3600 Pennsylvania Ave., the governor said.
The officers went to the 20-unit building and saw smoke coming through the door frame of one of the units and heard a woman crying for help, said Capt. Gerry Fogel of the Fremont Fire Department.
