Man answered door of burning home armed with shotgun, fire rescue official says
This was no ordinary house fire. Rodney Biddle knew that as soon as he saw the police officers draw their guns.
About 8:30 Monday morning, Biddle saw smoke coming from a garage attached to a one-story house at 115 W Sligh Ave. as he was driving his daughter to an appointment.
He rushed up to the house and started pounding on the door, as other passersby grabbed a hose to douse the flames coming from the garage, he said. Biddle said he had nearly put out the garage fire when a couple of police cruisers driving by noticed the scene and stopped to help.
But when the officers pounded on the door, homeowner Eddie Carl Jones, 59, answered armed with a shotgun, according to Capt. Bill Wade of Tampa Fire Rescue.
"The police officer shouted, 'He's got a gun, get back.' So we all scurried ... and ran back. They drew their pistols and backed up to a safe position," Biddle told the St. Petersburg Times. Biddle wasn't injured.
