A program that provides tuition assistance and career counseling to hundreds of victims of domestic violence is being shut down after Gov. Rod Blagojevich's line-item veto eliminated its funding, officials said Friday.
After $621,300 was cut from what is known as the Displaced Homemaker program, Prairie State College in Chicago stopped offering the aid. The school is one of 10 community colleges across the state that administer the program.
Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield plans to end its involvement at the end of the year. And officials at other schools such as Harper College in Palatine say they will be forced to do the same.
